How to Install and Configure QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray System
A comprehensive guide for modifying, bending, and joining QUICK TRAY PRO™ cable tray sections to create custom cable management pathways, ensuring proper support and configuration for your installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
QTPBC Side Action Bolt Cutter
Supplies needed:
QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray sections, Splice Kits (e.g., QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK), Splice Washers (e.g., QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK), Universal Splice Bars (e.g., QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK), T-Connection or 90-degree Splice Bars (e.g., QTP90TKIT/QTP90TKITBLK)
- Plan Your Cable Tray Layout
Before cutting or bending, determine the required length, width, and depth of cable tray sections. Review the desired bends, tees, or junctions, and identify the specific cutting patterns provided in the manual for your tray size and configuration. Consider cable fill ratios according to NEC 392.9 (B) to ensure adequate capacity.
- Cut Cable Tray Sections to Length or for Bends
Use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC) to make all cuts. When cutting for a bend, refer to the specific cutting pattern for your tray size and desired bend, removing the indicated wires. Always position the cutting jaws on the cradle wire and cut at an angle away from the new end to minimize sharp edges and protect against corrosion. Make one clean cut to avoid grinding or touch-up.
- Form a 90-Degree Bend
At the desired bend location, cut all side wires according to the specific pattern for your tray width. Turn the tray onto its uncut side and smoothly bend it until the inside edges closest to the uncut side meet. Secure the bend using Splice Kits (e.g., QTBNWK/QTBNWKBLK) and Splice Washers (e.g., QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK) at the indicated locations for your tray width.
- Join Cable Tray Sections
To connect straight sections or form elbows/tees, align the wires of the two tray sections at the desired angle. Fasten the sections together using Splice Kits (e.g., QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK) and Splice Washers (e.g., QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK). For adjustable elbows, use one splice kit and washer, centered, ensuring the splice washer covers two tray bottom wires. For specific configurations like Y-junctions or width reductions, follow the detailed cutting and connection instructions in the manual, potentially using Universal Splice Bars.
- Support the Cable Tray System
Install supports for straight sections at typical 6-foot (1.5m) centers. Ensure supports are placed within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice on straight sections. The span between supports must not exceed the length of the tray section. Provide additional supports around bends and wherever the cable tray changes levels to maintain stability and load bearing capacity.
