Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on copper conductors. This guide covers conductor preparation, connector selection, and proper crimping using approved tools and dies.
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool, Approved dies for the selected connector series, NSI M-250 crimp tool for 250 MCM Class B & C copper cable, NSI M-500 crimp tool for 500 MCM Class B & C copper cable, NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool, NSI N1240 tool
Supplies needed:
Correctly sized NSI copper compression lug or splice, Copper conductor, Insulation to be stripped from conductor
- Select the correct connector
Choose a lug or splice that matches the cable size and connector series required for the installation. Verify that the connector is approved for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors before proceeding.
- Prepare the conductor
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough length so the conductor will fully insert into the barrel and completely fill it.
- Clean the stripped conductor
Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the conductor is clean before insertion, because a dirty conductor can reduce connection quality.
- Insert the conductor fully
Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel so the stripped portion is fully seated. Confirm that the conductor fills the barrel and is not partially inserted.
- Crimp with the approved tool
Crimp the connector using an approved UL-certified tool and the correct die set for the connector series. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the number of crimps shown for the connector type; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice the crimps indicated. Use the NSI M-250 for 250 MCM Class B & C cable, the NSI M-500 for 500 MCM Class B & C cable, or the NSI N12ID/N1240 tools when applicable.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the completed crimp to confirm the conductor is fully seated and the connector is properly compressed at the marked locations. Do not use the connector if the conductor was nicked, the barrel was not fully filled, or the crimp does not match the specified tool and die requirements.
