How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. Select the correct connector size, prepare the conductor, and crimp it with the approved tool and die set.

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool, Approved dies for the selected connector size

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression connector (lug or splice) sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose the NSI lug or splice that matches the conductor size and application. Verify the connector series, barrel length, and approved tool/die requirements before starting.

  2. Strip the conductor insulation

Carefully strip the insulation to the specified length so the conductor can fully insert into the barrel. Do not nick or damage the strands while stripping.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the conductor is clean and ready for a solid electrical connection.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel until it is fully seated. Confirm the conductor fills the barrel and is not partially inserted.

  5. Crimp the connector

Use an approved NSI compression tool and the correct die set for the connector size. Make the required number of crimps at the marked locations; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice the number of crimps shown in the chart.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is secure and properly formed. Check that the conductor remains fully seated and that the connection matches the manufacturer’s crimp guidance.
