Install an NSI AL-series aluminum compression lug or splice connector by selecting the correct size, preparing the conductor, inserting it fully, and crimping it with the approved tool. Follow the strip-length and crimp-count guidance for a secure connection.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Approved compression crimp tool (NSI N12ID, N1240 series, Greenlee EK/RK/HK1240,, Burndy Y-35/Y750/PAT 750 as applicable), Wire brush, Wire stripper, Appropriate die set or dieless crimp tool, 15-ton tool for 1000 MCM connectors
Supplies needed:
Correctly sized AL, AL-N, AL-NT, or ASC-T lug/splice connector, Aluminum conductor, Connector barrel markings/strip-length reference, Approved connector-specific dies or crimping accessories
- Select the correct connector
Choose a lug or splice connector that matches the conductor size and series requirements. Verify the wire range, color code, and strip length in the chart before starting. Do not use a connector that does not match the cable size.
- Strip the conductor to the specified length
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough insulation so the conductor can be completely inserted into and fill the barrel of the lug or splice. Use the charted strip length for the selected connector size.
- Clean the conductor
Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films. Ensure the exposed aluminum is clean before insertion, because contamination can reduce connection quality.
- Insert the conductor fully
Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel so the stripped portion fills the barrel. Confirm full insertion before crimping. For splice connectors, prepare each side separately and remember that the number of crimps is per side.
- Crimp the connector
Crimp the connector using the approved tool and die set for the connector series. Follow the manufacturer’s suggested crimp locations marked on the barrel when using N12ID or N1240 tools. Apply the required number of crimps for the connector size and series.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the connector to confirm the conductor remains fully seated and the crimps are made at the correct locations. For 1000 MCM connectors, use 15-ton tools only. Do not energize the circuit until the connection has been inspected and approved.
