Install aluminum compression lugs or splice connectors by selecting the correct connector size, preparing the conductor, and crimping it with the approved tool and die. Follow the strip-length and crimp-count requirements to ensure a secure connection.
Tools needed:
Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved crimp tool (NSI N12ID, N1240 series, Greenlee EK/RK/HK1240, Burndy Y-35, Y750, PAT 750), Approved dies for the selected connector series
Supplies needed:
Correctly sized aluminum lug or splice connector, Conductor cable, Connector barrel markings/reference chart
- Select the correct connector
Choose the proper aluminum lug or splice connector for the cable size you are installing. Verify that the connector series and wire range match the conductor size before starting.
- Strip the conductor to the specified length
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough insulation so the conductor can be completely inserted into the connector barrel and fill it fully. Use the strip length specified for the connector size.
- Clean the stripped conductor
Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films. Make sure the exposed conductor is clean before insertion.
- Insert the conductor fully into the connector
Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel. Confirm that the conductor is fully seated and fills the barrel before crimping.
- Crimp the connector with the approved tool
Crimp the connector using the approved tool and die for the connector series. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and apply the required number of crimps per side for splice connectors. Use the special 15-ton tool requirement for 1000 MCM connectors.
