How to Install and Crimp NSI Aluminum Compression Connectors

Install an NSI aluminum compression lug or splice connector by selecting the correct connector size, preparing the conductor, inserting it fully, and crimping it with the approved tool and die. Follow the strip-length and crimp-count requirements for the specific wire size and connector series.

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Approved crimp tool, Approved die set or dieless crimp tool (NSI N12ID, N1240 series, or other UL/NSI, Cable stripper

Supplies needed:

NSI aluminum compression lug or splice connector, Aluminum conductor, Appropriate connector size for the wire range, Approved connector die/connector markings reference

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose the proper aluminum lug or splice connector for the conductor size you are installing. Verify that the connector series and wire range match the cable size, and use only approved UL/NSI tools and dies for the connector type.

  2. Strip the conductor to the specified length

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor to the strip length listed for the wire size. Do not nick or damage the strands, and make sure the stripped length is long enough for the conductor to fully insert into and fill the connector barrel.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Keep the conductor clean so the stripped portion can make proper contact inside the connector barrel.

  4. Insert the conductor fully into the barrel

Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel until it is fully seated. Confirm that the conductor fills the barrel and that no bare conductor is left improperly exposed outside the connector.

  5. Crimp the connector at the marked locations

Crimp the connector using the approved tool and die set, following the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations. Apply the required number of crimps for the connector type; for splice connectors, the crimp count is per side. For 1000 MCM connectors, use 15-ton tools.
