This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing a heat-shrink compression splice kit, including cable preparation, connector crimping, and proper heat-shrinking techniques to ensure a secure and insulated connection. WARNING: Disconnect power before installation to avoid risk of shock.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Torches, Wire brush, Crimping tool
Supplies needed:
Heat-shrink tubing, Compression connector, Oxide inhibitor
- Prepare Cable Insulation
Strip the insulation from both ends of the cable for a length equal to half the connector's length plus 1/4 inch, as shown in Figure 1. Wear safety glasses and protective gloves during this process.
- Clean Cable and Position Heat-Shrink Tubing
Clean the cable insulation thoroughly. Carefully place the heat-shrink tubing over one of the clean cable ends, ensuring to protect it from potential damage by the conductor strands as it slides over, as illustrated in Figure 2.
- Prepare Conductor Strands
Wire brush the conductor strands. If working with aluminum conductors, coat the conductor with oxide inhibitor and then wire brush it into the strands to ensure proper contact.
- Install and Crimp the Connector
Install the connector onto the prepared cable ends. Using a crimping tool, crimp the connector according to the recommended die size marked on the connector. After crimping, clean and deburr the connector if necessary, as shown in Figure 3.
- Shrink the Heat-Shrink Tubing
Center the heat-shrink tubing over the splice and hold it in place. Using a torch, apply the outer 3-4 inch tip of the flame to the heat-shrinkable material with a rapid brushing motion. Keep the flame moving to prevent scorching. Begin shrinking at the center of the tube, working the flame uniformly around all sides (a). Once the center is shrunk, work towards one end (b), then to the opposite end (c) until the entire tube is completely shrunk, as depicted in Figure 4. Follow manufacturer's safety precautions for gas torches.
- Inspect the Splice
Inspect the completed splice. A properly installed tube will appear smooth and conform tightly to the connection, with adhesive visible at both ends. Reheat any flat spots or wrinkles to ensure a complete seal. Allow the installation to cool completely before touching, moving, or placing it into service.
