How to Operate the TBM62PCR-LI Hydraulic Compression Tool
This guide provides instructions for charging the battery, attaching it to the TBM62PCR-LI tool, installing compression dies, and performing a safe and effective compression operation.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
BAT-MK Battery Charger, TBM62PCR-LI Hydraulic Compression Tool, Appropriate Compression Dies (e.g., Burndy 'W' Dies, DBL Dies), Flat Blade Screwdriver, Safety Glasses, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Supplies needed:
MAKITA LXT 18V Battery Pack (BAT-MK), 120V AC Power Source, Electrical Connector, Electrical Conductor
- Charge the Battery Pack
Connect the BAT-MK battery charger to a 120V AC power source; the charging light will flash green. Insert the BAT-MK battery pack firmly into the charger. The LED lamp will light red, indicating charging. If the LED flashes red due to high temperature, allow the battery to cool before charging. Wait approximately 45 minutes for a full charge; the LED lamp will turn green and an audible signal will indicate completion. Ensure the charging location is well-ventilated. Only use MAKITA LXT 18V battery packs and accessories designed for ABB Model TBM62PCR-LI.
- Attach the Battery Pack to the Tool
Slide the charged BAT-MK battery pack into the base of the TBM62PCR-LI tool until it stops and the latches engage securely. Gently pull the battery to confirm it is locked in place without pressing the latches.
- Install Compression Dies
WARNING: Disconnect the battery pack from the tool before making any adjustments or changing accessories. Wear safety glasses and any other required PPE. Retract the ram fully by pressing the release button on the tool. Open the tool head by lifting the latch. Select the appropriate size dies for the connector you are using. Loosen the two Die Retaining Screws. Insert one die half into the C-head and the other half into the Ram. Tighten the Die Retaining Screws to secure the dies. For Burndy “W” Dies, first install the DBL die set, then install the “W” dies over the DBL dies, securing them with the spring-loaded pins. Close the tool head by lifting the C-Head until it securely engages the latch.
- Perform a Compression Operation
WARNING: Never attempt to make a compression on a "HOT" line. Disconnect power before installation. Keep hands and other body parts away from the crimping head when crimping to avoid pinch points. Place the connector between the installed dies. Press the advance trigger to advance the ram, holding the connector lightly between the dies without deforming it. Insert the conductor into the connector. Press the advance trigger until the compression is complete. Listen for a series of clicks followed by a release in pressure. A green LED indicator and an audible beep will confirm a complete compression. If the LED flashes red and multiple beeps occur, the compression was incomplete due to early trigger release or a low battery; check the battery level.
- Retract the Ram and Remove the Connector
Press and hold the release button to retract the ram fully. The ram will continue to retract as long as the button is pressed, stopping when fully retracted. Remove the compressed connector from the tool.
- Configure Auto-Retract Feature (Optional)
To disable the auto-retract function, locate and remove the rubber grommet on the tool. Use a flat blade screwdriver to rotate the internal indicator 90 degrees to the desired position. The document only describes how to turn it off, implying it is on by default or can be toggled.
