How to Operate and Calibrate the TBM5-S Compression Tool
This guide provides instructions for preparing the TBM5-S compression tool for use, making proper electrical compressions, and verifying its calibration to ensure reliable connections.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Gage pin, Wire brush or emery cloth, Screwdriver
Supplies needed:
Appropriate die set, Thomas & Betts connector, Electrical conductor, Joint compound
- Install the Correct Die
Open the tool handles fully. Pull out any existing die from under the die retaining spring. Hold the new die with the desired crimping nest and color code in the lower right corner. Insert the die under the die retaining spring in the tool head, ensuring the spring holds the die by pressure on the die locator pin. Match the color on the connector to the color on the die. WARNING: Keep fingers clear of die nests whenever handles are brought together.
- Prepare the Conductor
Strip insulation from the conductor according to the connector's instruction sheet, taking care not to cut or nick the conductor strands. For aluminum conductors, smear a thin layer of joint compound onto the conductor and brush it in with a wire brush or emery cloth. Insert the prepared conductor into the connector barrel until it bottoms out.
- Make a Compression
Locate the connector in the die grooves, positioning the die between the color code marks for copper or on the color code marks for aluminum. If multiple compressions are required (refer to connector instructions), start the first compression nearest the tongue of a terminal or center of a splice, then work progressively toward the barrel end. Close the tool handles completely for each compression until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism releases. WARNING: If it becomes necessary to release the Shure Stake® Mechanism before completion of the crimp cycle, slightly squeeze handles, and push the dowel pin, releasing the locking mechanism allowing the handles to open.
- Verify Tool Adjustment (Handle Spread Check)
Insert a die into the tool. Lay the tool on a flat surface. Open handle A and allow it to close under its own weight, ensuring the ram touches the die. Measure the distance between the handle grips; it should be between 11 and 14 inches. If adjustment is needed, loosen the lockscrew, turn the adjusting screw clockwise to increase handle distance or counterclockwise to decrease it. Tighten the lockscrew and recheck.
- Perform Gaging Procedure for Calibration Verification
Wipe dies clean. Squeeze handles until jaws are fully closed. Select the appropriate gage pin for the die nest. Insert the gage pin into the nest with minimal hand pressure. Verify that the gage pin falls within the minimum and maximum limits specified in the Gaging Table (Section 3.4 of the manual) for the specific die color and catalog number.
