Overview

ABB Installation Products STAR TECK XP fitting (SKU: STX200-474PVC) is a hazardous location cable fitting designed for PVC-coated jacketed cables in petrochemical, oil, and gas applications. This 2-inch hub fitting features an integral sealing chamber that simplifies installation in classified areas, reducing cable preparation time. The disconnectable design allows for easy adjustments without full disassembly, improving workflow efficiency in field conditions. Unlike traditional cement sealants, this fitting uses liquid or putty sealants for faster sealing and reduced installation steps. The fitting accommodates cable jacket diameters from 2.100 to 2.375 inches, providing a secure seal against moisture, dust, and hazardous atmospheres. Compatible with ABB’s line of sealants, it meets the demands of Class I, II, and III hazardous locations as defined by NEC/CEC standards. Engineered for reliability in extreme environments, this fitting eliminates the need for specialized tools or complex procedures, making it a practical choice for engineers prioritizing installation speed and compliance.
  • Working with engineers from the petrochemical, oil and gas industries, Thomas & Betts then introduced the STAR TECK XP fitting.
  • With an easy-to-fill, integral sealing chamber and a disconnectable design requiring minimal cable preparation, this fitting became the benchmark for ease of installation in hazardous environments.
  • A line of liquid and putty sealants was also developed at the same time, eliminating the need for the cement sealants used up to this point.
  • Compatible with liquid or putty sealants (no cement required)
  • Accommodates PVC-coated jacketed cables (2.100–2.375" diameter range)

How to Install the STX200-474PVC Cable Fitting

Instructions for installing the STX200-474PVC Star Teck™ PVC cable fitting, including preparation and sealing.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Strap wrenches (for PVC coated fittings), Dowel (for packing compound)

Supplies needed:

Sealing compound (SC4-KIT-1 Liquid Sealant or SC65 Putty Sealant), Lubricant (optional, for gland nut)

  1. Prepare the cable jacket and armor

Determine the required working length of the conductors. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. Be careful not to nick the conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to the strip length indicated in the table.

  2. Prepare the cable boot

To cut the cable boot, either unscrew the gland nut and force the cable into the boot, cutting the boot in front of the cable, or progressively cut slices off the boot until it can snugly slide onto the armor.

  3. Feed cable through gland nut

Feed the cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor contacts the end stop.

  4. Tighten the gland nut

Tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque specified. Ensure the cable remains centered for optimal sealing.

  5. Prepare for sealing compound

Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly and unscrew the sealing chamber from the body. For shielded data cables, trim the inner jacket to 1/8"-3/8" to expose the conductor bundle, then remove the outer shield and filler materials without damaging inner shields.

  6. Apply sealing compound

If using liquid sealant (SC4-KIT-1), pack fiber damming material into voids and spread grounding conductor strands. Mix the compound, dispense into the sealing chamber until the level stabilizes (fill to top for smaller fittings, half-full then top up after 2 hours for larger fittings). If using putty sealant (SC65), mix the two parts until uniform, apply between conductors and around them, then slide the sealing chamber onto the cable and compound, screwing it to the body. Fill the throat area of the sealing chamber with compound and pack tightly around conductors.

  7. Assemble and secure the fitting

Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly. Position the fitting vertically. Once the sealing compound is solidified (approx. 1 hour for liquid, or after setting for putty), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
