How to Install the STX300-478PVC Cable Fitting

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the STX300-478PVC cable fitting, and properly applying the liquid-type sealing compound for a secure and safe installation in hazardous locations.

Estimated time: 4h

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Strap wrenches

Supplies needed:

SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT, Fiber damming material, Lubricant, Damp cloth, Gloves

  1. De-energize Circuits and Prepare Cable

WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Determine the working length of conductors required inside the enclosure or device. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation.

  2. Trim Outer Jacket and Cut Cable Boot

Trim the outer jacket to expose the armor strip length as indicated in the product table (for STX300-478PVC, this is approximately 2.466-2.750 inches). To determine where to cut the cable boot, either unscrew the gland nut from the body, force the square-cut cable into the boot, and cut the boot in front of the cable, or strip the cable jacket off the armor and progressively cut slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide on the armor.

  3. Feed Cable and Tighten Gland Nut

Apply lubricant where indicated prior to screwing the gland nut. Feed the cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the end stop. Tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque of 286 in-lbs. Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and the cable remains centered to obtain an optimal seal. Use strap wrenches for PVC coated fittings.

  4. Disassemble and Trim Inner Jacket

Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8”-3/8” to expose the conductor bundle.

  5. Pack Fiber Damming Material and Reassemble Sealing Chamber

Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between the conductors and the body. Spread the strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor, where applicable. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body subassembly until it completely seats on the body.

  6. Apply Liquid Sealing Compound (SC4-KIT-1)

Position the cable/fitting into a vertical position. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound following the instructions provided on its package. For STX300-478PVC and up, fill approximately HALF of the sealing chamber. Wait 2 hours for the compound to settle. After the waiting period, fill the rest of the sealing chamber to the top. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners such as powder cleaners, sand paper, steel wool, or a wire brush that may damage the flame path.

  7. Mount Hub and Secure Assembly

Mount the hub in the desired location. When the sealing compound is solidified (after approximately 1 hour from the final fill), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
