How to Install the STX250-475PVC Star Teck Cable Fitting
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the STX250-475PVC Star Teck PVC cable fitting, and properly sealing it for hazardous locations using either liquid or putty compound.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Strap wrenches, Wooden dowel (if using putty sealant)
Supplies needed:
SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT (5 units), SC65 PUTTY SEALANT (3 units), Fiber damming material (if using liquid sealant), Lubricant, Gloves (if using putty sealant), Cable (compatible with STX250-475PVC)
- De-energize Circuits and Prepare Cable Armor
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installation or maintenance, verify all circuits are de-energized. Determine the working length of conductors. Remove the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor with a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to expose 3 inches of armor.
- Prepare Cable Boot and Feed Cable
Unscrew the gland nut from the body. Prepare the cable boot by either forcing the cable in and cutting the boot in front of it, or stripping the jacket and progressively cutting slices off the boot until it snugly slides on the armor. Feed the cable through the gland nut opening until the armor hits the end stop. Note: Use strap wrenches for PVC coated fittings and apply lubricant before tightening the gland nut.
- Tighten Gland Nut and Disassemble Fitting
Tighten the gland nut to a maximum torque of 1600 IN-LBS until an appropriate seal is obtained. Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable's outer jacket and the cable remains centered. Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union, then unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly.
- Prepare Conductors for Sealing
Trim the inner jacket to 1/8-3/8 inches to expose the conductor bundle. For shielded data cables, additionally remove the outer (overall) shield and filler materials, taking care not to nick or damage inner shields.
- Apply Sealing Compound (Choose One Method)
Choose your sealing compound: METHOD A (Liquid SC4-KIT-1): Pack fiber damming material into voids, screw sealing chamber back, position fitting vertically, mix and fill chamber to the top. Allow 1 hour to solidify. METHOD B (Putty SC65 - NOT for shielded/5+ conductor cables): WARNING: Wear gloves. Mix compound until uniform (blue). Spread conductors, apply compound to form a plug, slide chamber on, screw it to body, and pack compound tightly into the throat with a wooden dowel. Allow 1 hour to set. CAUTION: For both methods, remove excess compound with a damp cloth; do not use abrasive cleaners.
- Mount Hub and Secure Assembly
Mount the hub in the desired location. After the sealing compound has solidified (approximately 1 hour), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub. Secure the assembly by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
