How to Install an STX Series Star Teck™ PVC Cable Fitting
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the fitting, and applying the appropriate sealing compound for STX Series Star Teck™ PVC cable fittings in hazardous locations.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Strap wrenches, Screwdriver, Multimeter, Suitable wooden dowel (if using putty sealant)
Supplies needed:
SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT or SC65 PUTTY SEALANT (purchased separately), Fiber damming material (if using liquid sealant), Lubricant, Gloves and other proper PPE (if using putty sealant), Damp cloth
- De-energize Circuits and Review Safety
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before beginning installation or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Read and understand all instructions and safety information. Ensure installation is performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. CAUTION: Fittings for hazardous locations must be assembled with SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT or SC65 PUTTY SEALANT.
- Prepare the Cable
Determine the working length of conductors required inside the enclosure or device. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to expose the armor to the appropriate strip length as indicated in the product table for your specific STX model.
- Prepare the Cable Boot
Determine where to cut the cable boot. You can either unscrew the gland nut, force the square-cut cable into the boot, and cut the boot in front of the cable (Method 1), or strip the cable jacket off the armor and progressively cut slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide onto the armor (Method 2). Apply lubricant where indicated on the assembly view prior to screwing the gland nut. Note: Use strap wrenches only for PVC coated fittings.
- Assemble Cable into Gland Nut
Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the end stop. Tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque specified in the product table (e.g., 1600 IN-LBS for STX250-476PVC). Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable's outer jacket and the cable remains centered to obtain an optimal seal.
- Disassemble Fitting and Prepare Conductors
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. For power cables, trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8"-3/8" to expose the conductor bundle. For shielded data cables, trim the inner jacket (1/8"-3/8") to expose the shielded conductor bundle, then remove the outer (overall) shield and filler materials, taking care not to nick or damage inner shields.
- Apply Sealing Compound
Choose the appropriate sealing compound: If using liquid-type SC4-KIT-1 (suitable for all power and shielded data cables), pack fiber damming material tightly into voids, screw the sealing chamber back, position vertically, mix and fill the chamber (for STX250-476 and smaller, fill to the top). If using putty-type SC65 (do not use for shielded cables or 5+ conductors), spread conductors, mix compound thoroughly (usable life 30 minutes at 70°F/21°C or above), apply compound to form a plug around conductors, slide and screw the sealing chamber, then fill the throat area with compound using a wooden dowel. WARNING: Wear gloves and other proper PPE with SC65. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside the sealing chamber with a damp cloth; do not use abrasive cleaners.
- Final Assembly and Curing
Mount the hub in the desired location. Once the sealing compound is solidified (after approximately 1 hour), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact). If using putty compound, repack compound tightly around conductors if required and allow it to set for approximately one hour before disturbing conductors.
