Overview

The ABB STX200-472SPVC is a Steel Star Teck XP hazardous location jacketed cable fitting, featuring a 2-inch hub size and a durable PVC coating. This fitting was developed in collaboration with engineers from the petrochemical, oil and gas industries, establishing a new benchmark for ease of installation in hazardous environments. Its integral sealing chamber is designed for straightforward filling, and the disconnectable construction minimizes cable preparation time. The introduction of this fitting also coincided with the development of specialized liquid and putty sealants, replacing older cement-based methods. This ensures a reliable and efficient sealing solution for critical infrastructure where safety and performance are paramount. The STX200-472SPVC is manufactured by ABB Installation Products, ensuring adherence to stringent industrial standards. Its robust construction and specific design features make it suitable for applications requiring secure and compliant cable entry in potentially explosive atmospheres. The 2-inch hub size accommodates standard conduit and cable gland connections, facilitating integration into existing electrical systems. The PVC coating provides additional protection against corrosion and environmental factors commonly found in industrial settings.

How to Install the STX200-472SPVC Cable Fitting

Instructions for installing the STX200-472SPVC Star Teck™ PVC cable fitting, including preparation and sealing.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Strap wrenches (for PVC coated fittings), Dowel (for packing compound)

Supplies needed:

Sealing compound (SC4-KIT-1 Liquid Sealant or SC65 Putty Sealant), Lubricant (optional, for gland nut)

  1. Prepare the cable jacket and armor

Determine the required working length of the conductors. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. Be careful not to nick the conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to the strip length indicated in the table.

  2. Prepare the cable boot

To cut the cable boot, either unscrew the gland nut and force the cable into the boot, cutting the boot in front of the cable, or progressively cut slices off the boot until it can snugly slide onto the armor.

  3. Feed cable through gland nut

Feed the cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor contacts the end stop.

  4. Tighten the gland nut

Tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque specified. Ensure the cable remains centered for optimal sealing.

  5. Prepare for sealing compound

Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly and unscrew the sealing chamber from the body. For shielded data cables, trim the inner jacket to 1/8"-3/8" to expose the conductor bundle, then remove the outer shield and filler materials without damaging inner shields.

  6. Apply sealing compound

If using liquid sealant (SC4-KIT-1), pack fiber damming material into voids and spread grounding conductor strands. Mix the compound, dispense into the sealing chamber until the level stabilizes (fill to top for smaller fittings, half-full then top up after 2 hours for larger fittings). If using putty sealant (SC65), mix the two parts until uniform, apply between conductors and around them, then slide the sealing chamber onto the cable and compound, screwing it to the body. Fill the throat area of the sealing chamber with compound and pack tightly around conductors.

  7. Assemble and secure the fitting

Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly. Position the fitting vertically. Once the sealing compound is solidified (approx. 1 hour for liquid, or after setting for putty), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
