A comprehensive guide for preparing a cable, assembling the STX075-466 Star Teck fitting, and applying the liquid-type sealing compound for a secure and compliant installation.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Wrench, Damp cloth, Gloves, Torque wrench (optional)
Supplies needed:
STX075-466 Cable Fitting, Cable (compatible with 0.825-0.985 inch jacket diameter), SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT, Fiber damming material
- De-energize Circuits and Prepare Cable
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Determine the required working length of conductors inside the enclosure or device. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the cable armor. Cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to achieve an exposed armor strip length of 1 inch for the STX075-466 fitting.
- Feed Cable and Tighten Gland Nut
Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor firmly hits the end stop. Tighten the gland nut using a wrench until an appropriate seal is obtained, or to a maximum torque of 700 IN-LBS. Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and are flush with the gland nut face. Verify the cable remains centered to obtain an optimal seal.
- Disassemble Fitting and Trim Inner Jacket
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8 to 3/8 inches to expose the conductor bundle.
- Prepare and Apply Liquid Sealing Compound (SC4-KIT-1)
Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between the conductors and the body. Spread the strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor, where applicable. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly until it completely seats. Position the cable and fitting into a vertical position. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound following instructions provided on its package. Dispense the sealing compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the level of compound stabilizes and fills to the top. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners such as powder cleaners, sand paper, steel wool, or a wire brush that may damage the flame path.
- Allow Compound to Solidify and Final Assembly
Allow the sealing compound to solidify for approximately 1 hour. Mount the hub in the desired location. When the sealing compound is solidified, place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
