Overview

The ABB - Installation Products STX125-469 Star Teck hazardous location fitting is engineered for critical applications where safety and reliability are paramount. Developed in collaboration with engineers from the petrochemical, oil and gas industries, the STAR TECK XP fitting sets a new standard for ease of installation in hazardous environments. Its design features an integral sealing chamber that is simple to fill, significantly reducing installation time and complexity. The disconnectable nature of the fitting requires minimal cable preparation, further streamlining the process. This innovation eliminated the need for traditional cement sealants, as a specialized line of liquid and putty sealants was introduced concurrently, offering a cleaner and more efficient sealing method. The STX125-469 is specifically designed for aluminum jacketed cables, with a hub size of 1-1/4 inch and accommodating a jacket range from 1.187 to 1.375 inches. This precise fit ensures a secure and compliant termination in environments classified as hazardous. The UNSPSC code for this product is 39121311. Trust ABB - Installation Products for robust and compliant solutions in challenging industrial settings.

How to Install an STX125-469 Star Teck Cable Fitting

This guide details the installation of an STX125-469 Star Teck cable fitting, covering cable preparation, assembly, and sealing with liquid compound. Ensure all circuits are de-energized before beginning installation to prevent electrical shock.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Screwdriver, Damp cloth

Supplies needed:

STX125-469 Star Teck Cable Fitting, SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT, Fiber damming material, Gloves and other proper PPE

  1. De-energize Circuits and Prepare Cable

WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Determine the required working length of conductors inside the enclosure. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the cable armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to achieve an exposed armor strip length between 1.187 and 1.375 inches, and an exposed armor length between 1.067 and 1.295 inches.

  2. Insert Cable and Tighten Gland Nut

Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor firmly hits the end stop. Tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque of 1000 IN-LBS. Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and are flush with the gland nut face, keeping the cable centered for an optimal seal.

  3. Disassemble Fitting and Trim Inner Jacket

Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8 to 3/8 inches to expose the conductor bundle. If installing shielded data cables, refer to Section 2 of the original documentation for additional trimming steps.

  4. Prepare Sealing Chamber for Liquid Compound

Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between the conductors and the body of the fitting. Spread the strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor where applicable to ensure proper compound distribution.

  5. Apply Liquid Sealing Compound

Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly until it completely seats. Position the cable and fitting into a vertical orientation. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound thoroughly according to the instructions provided on its package. Dispense the mixed sealing compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the level stabilizes and fills to the top. CAUTION: Immediately remove all excess compound material from the outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners that may damage the flame path.

  6. Mount Hub and Secure Encapsulated Assembly

Allow the sealing compound to solidify for approximately 1 hour. Once solidified, mount the hub in the desired location. Place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms, ensuring metal-to-metal contact.
