This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Star Teck PVC cable fittings, ensuring a secure and sealed connection for armored cables. Always read and understand all safety information before proceeding.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Strap wrenches, Cable stripping tool
Supplies needed:
Appropriate Star Teck PVC cable fitting, Armored cable, Wire pulling lubricant (optional, Cat. No. 15-236)
- Select the Correct Fitting
Choose the appropriate Star Teck PVC cable fitting that matches your enclosure and cable specifications. Refer to the assembly and table provided in the product documentation to ensure compatibility.
- Prepare the Cable Armor
WARNING: Disconnect power before installation to prevent risk of shock. Determine the required working length of the cable. Carefully remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the cable armor. Use a hacksaw to cut the armor, then trim the outer jacket to achieve the exposed armor strip length specified in the product table (refer to Figures 1 and 2 in the documentation).
- Prepare the Cable Boot
Determine where to cut the cable boot using one of two methods: Method 1: Unscrew the gland nut from the fitting body. Force the square-cut cable into the boot, then cut the boot directly in front of the cable end (Figure 3A). Method 2: Strip the cable jacket off the armor. Progressively cut thin slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide onto the cable armor (Figure 3B). CAUTION: Do not over-strip the boot; ensure there are no gaps between the boot and the cable jacket.
- Insert Cable into Gland Nut
Feed the prepared cable through the opening of the gland nut. Push the cable until its armor firmly hits the internal end stop of the fitting (Figure 4). The use of wire pulling lubricant (Cat. No. 15-236) may facilitate easier installation.
- Tighten the Gland Nut
Using strap wrenches (for PVC coated fittings), tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is achieved or to the maximum torque specified in the product table (refer to Figure 5). Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable's outer jacket and that the cable remains centered for an optimal seal. CAUTION: Product should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
