How to Install Star Teck™ PVC Cable Fittings
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of Star Teck™ PVC cable fittings, including cable preparation, boot trimming, and final sealing procedures. WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect power before installation. CAUTION: Product should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Strap wrenches
Supplies needed:
Star Teck™ PVC Cable Fitting, Cable, Wire pulling lubricant (optional)
- Select Appropriate Fitting
Choose the correct Star Teck™ PVC cable fitting that matches the enclosure and the cable being used. Refer to the assembly diagram and product table provided in the documentation for compatibility.
- Prepare the Cable
Determine the required working length of the cable. Carefully remove a portion of the cable's outer jacket to expose the armor. Use a hacksaw to cut the armor to the specified length, then trim the outer jacket to achieve the exposed armor strip length indicated in the product table (Figures 1 and 2).
- Prepare the Cable Boot
Prepare the cable boot using one of two methods: Method 1: Unscrew the gland nut from the fitting body. Force the square-cut cable into the boot, then cut the boot directly in front of the cable end (Figure 3A). Method 2: Strip the cable jacket off the armor. Progressively cut small slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide onto the cable armor (Figure 3B). CAUTION: Do not over-strip the boot; there should be no gaps between the boot and the cable jacket.
- Insert Cable into Fitting
Carefully feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening. Push the cable until its armor firmly hits the internal end stop of the fitting (Figure 4). The use of wire pulling lubricant (e.g., cat. number 15-236) will allow easier installation.
- Secure and Seal the Fitting
Tighten the gland nut using strap wrenches (as PVC coated fittings require them) until an appropriate seal is achieved, or to the maximum torque specified in the product table. Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable's outer jacket and that the cable remains centered within the fitting for an optimal seal (Figure 5).
