This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Star Teck™ PVC cable fittings, including cable preparation, boot trimming, and final tightening to ensure a proper seal for armored cables.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Strap wrenches
Supplies needed:
Star Teck™ PVC Cable Fitting (ST200-474PVC), Armored cable, Wire pulling lubricant (optional, e.g., cat. number 15-236)
- Prepare the Cable for Fitting
WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect power before installation. CAUTION: Product should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Determine the required working length for your cable. Carefully remove a portion of the cable's outer jacket to expose the armor. Use a hacksaw to cut the armor to the specified strip length as indicated in the product table for ST200-474PVC. Trim the outer jacket to adjust the exposed armor strip length accordingly.
- Trim the Cable Boot
To determine where to cut the cable boot, choose one of the following methods: Method 1: Unscrew the gland nut from the fitting body. Force the square-cut cable into the boot and then cut the boot in front of the cable. Method 2: Strip the cable jacket off the armor. Progressively cut slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide onto the cable armor. CAUTION: Do not over strip the boot; there should be no gaps between the boot and the cable jacket.
- Feed and Seat the Cable
If desired, apply wire pulling lubricant (e.g., cat. number 15-236) to the cable to facilitate easier installation. Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push it firmly until the cable armor hits the internal end stop of the fitting.
- Tighten the Gland Nut for Seal
Using strap wrenches only (as PVC coated fittings require), tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque specified in the product table for ST200-474PVC. Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable's outer jacket and that the cable remains centered to achieve an optimal seal.
