How to Install the Service Entrance Disconnect System (SSP Series)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Service Entrance Disconnect System Multiple Service Kit (SSP Series). It covers initial power disconnection, mounting, wiring, and reconnection. Always follow standard safety practices, wear appropriate insulated gloves, and adhere to all electrical codes.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Approved safety cutting device, Appropriate crimping tool with listed dies (e.g., 5/8 die), Wire strippers, Torque wrench (calibrated for 480 in-lb), Insulated gloves rated to appropriate voltage

Supplies needed:

U-Bolt (included with kit), Breakaway link, CS 2011 Flood-Seal® Insulating rockets, Silicone grease, Compression lugs, CS 2277 Flood-Seal® insulating rockets, Pin Connectors, Replacement service cables (if needed)

  1. Disconnect Power and Secure Service Drop

Disconnect the power cables from the transformer or feed. Secure the service drop to prevent accidental re-energization. Ensure all circuits are de-energized before proceeding.

  2. Install Breakaway Link

Open the neutral wedge clamp. Install the breakaway link between the wedge clamp and the pole hardware. Tighten the service drop as required to ensure a secure connection.

  3. Mount the Contact Block

Install the contact block to the eyebolt using the included U-Bolt. Tighten the nuts from the pole side of the contact block to firmly secure it in place.

  4. Prepare Service Cables

Cut the service cables from the transformer or feed. If the existing cables are not large enough for multiple loads, replace them with the proper size. Ensure the feed cables have sufficient slack when held alongside the pads to allow the contact block to swing freely.

  5. Prepare Hot Legs and Crimp Lugs

Using an approved safety cutting device, cut two CS 2011 Flood-Seal® Insulating rockets at the appropriate ring. Install these rockets onto the two hot legs. Apply silicone grease to the cables to ease the installation of the rockets. Crimp appropriately sized compression lugs onto the three cables using an appropriate crimping tool and listed dies.

  6. Terminate Neutral and Hot Legs

Terminate the neutral lug onto the center pad of the contact block first, ensuring the barrel is correctly positioned over the pad. Torque this connection to 480 in-lb. Next, install one of the hot (energized) legs as per the neutral leg, sliding the Flood-Seal® insulating rocket over the connection. Repeat this process for the other hot leg. Remember to wear insulated gloves rated to the appropriate voltage when working on energized circuits.

  7. Position Load-Side Triplex Service Cable

Position the load-side triplex service cable alongside the Storm-Safe® contact block. Ensure that the neutral conductor is 6 to 12 inches longer than the phase conductors. This length difference is critical to ensure the neutral pulls out last in the event of a storm.

  8. Prepare Load-Side Insulating Rockets

Using an approved safety cutting device, cut two CS 2277 Flood-Seal® insulating rockets at the appropriate ring. Install these rockets onto the two load-side hot conductors.

  9. Prepare Load-Side Pin Connectors

Position the load-side cables alongside the pin connectors and mark them at 1/8 inch beyond the knurl mark. Mark and strip the cable. If a reduced neutral is present, determine which is the neutral socket. Crimp the Pin Connectors onto the conductors using a 5/8 or equivalent die as indicated on the crimp body. Fill the crimp body between the knurl marks with crimps spaced 1/8 inch apart (typically five crimps with a 5/8 die).

  10. Insert Neutral Pin

Insert the Neutral Pin into the contact block. The neutral is located in the center row and is identified with a white marker. Note that the neutral body is oversized and cannot be inserted into a hot leg tower.

  11. Insert Hot Leg Pins and Insulating Rockets

Insert one of the hot leg pins into one of the outer contact block towers. Slide the Flood-Seal® insulating rockets over the towers. Do not use silicone grease for these rockets. Repeat this process for the other hot leg service. Remember that a rocket is not required for the Neutral leg.

  12. Reconnect Transformer or Feed

Once all connections are secure and verified, reconnect the transformer or feed to restore power to the system. Ensure the connection is made when the contact block is energized but not under load.
