How to Install Sweetheart SHC 500 Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of Sweetheart SHC 500 Connectors. It covers cable preparation, conductor insertion, and final tightening procedures. Always ensure installation is performed by trained personnel in accordance with all applicable electrical codes and safety rules.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Cutting tool, Screwdriver, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Sweetheart SHC 500 Connectors, Electrical cable, Silicone grease
- Prepare the Rocket Sleeve
Remove the insulating sleeve from the outlet. Select the correct cut-off ring for the cable size you are using. Cut off the rocket sleeve at the tip of the arrow, ensuring the correct cable size is visible on the opened rocket.
- Strip the Cable Insulation
Strip approximately 2-1/4 inches of insulation from the cable end to expose the conductor.
- Bevel the Insulation (Optional)
For a cleaner fit, bevel the cut edge of the cable insulation. This step is preferred but not strictly necessary.
- Clean the Conductor
Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to break up and remove oxides from its surface.
- Lubricate and Position Rocket
Wipe the cable clean. Apply silicone grease to the prepared cable. Then, slide the cut rocket over the prepared cable.
- Insert Conductor
Insert the cleaned conductor into the outlet, ensuring that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is showing.
- Seat the Rocket Sleeve
Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder until the rocket firmly butts against the connector bar.
- Secure with Set Screws
Tighten the set screws down onto the conductors to the recommended torque specifications based on wire size: #6 to #4 at 120 in.-lbs. (10 ft.-lbs.), #2 to 350 MCM at 240 in.-lbs. (20 ft.-lbs.), and 400 to 500 MCM at 360 in.-lbs. (30 ft.-lbs.).
