This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and correct installation of the Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector SHC 3 through SHC 8 series. Ensure compliance with all applicable electrical codes and safety standards.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench, 5/16" Allen wrench, 3/8" drive ratchet with Allen adapter
Supplies needed:
Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector (SHC 3-8 series), Silicone grease (included with rocket), Compound (for conductor), Electrical cable (feed or service)
- Prepare Connector for Cable Size
WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Installation of this product must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules. Identify the specific cable size you are using. For feed cables, cut the SHC 3830 rocket/cap ring as indicated for the correct wire range. For service cables, cut the CS4197 rocket/cap ring as indicated for the correct wire range.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Strip approximately 2-1/4 inches of insulation from the cable, baring the conductor. Penciling the edge of the insulation is recommended but not mandatory.
- Clean and Prepare Conductor
Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to remove surface oxides. Apply compound to the conductor and brush it into the strands.
- Apply Grease and Slide Rocket
Wipe the cable clean. Apply the included silicone grease to the cable and slide the pre-cut rocket over the prepared cable.
- Insert Conductor into Outlet
Insert the prepared conductor into the connector's outlet. Ensure that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is showing.
- Position Rocket Sleeve
Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder. Continue sliding until the rocket firmly butts against the connector bar.
- Tighten Setscrews to Torque
Tighten the setscrews down onto the conductor. Use a torque wrench to achieve the specified torque: 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs) for #12 to #2 wire sizes, or 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs) for 1/0 to 350 Kcmil wire sizes. If a torque wrench is unavailable, use a 5/16” allen wrench or a 3/8” drive ratchet with an allen adapter. Do not use a 'T' handle wrench or 1/2” drive.
