This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing a heat-shrink compression splice kit. Disconnect power before installation and ensure all safety precautions are followed.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Torch, Safety glasses, Protective gloves
Supplies needed:
Heat-shrink tubing, Connector, Oxide inhibitor (for aluminum conductors)
- Strip Cable Insulation
Strip both ends of the cable insulation 1/2 the length of the connector, plus 1/4 inch, as shown in Figure 1.
- Clean Cable Insulation
Clean the stripped cable insulation.
- Place Heat-Shrink Tubing
Place the heat-shrink tubing over the clean cable end. Protect the heat-shrink tubing from possible damage from the conductor as it is placed over the cable end, as shown in Figure 2.
- Prepare Conductor
Wire brush the conductor strands. If using aluminum conductors, coat the conductor with oxide inhibitor and wire brush it into the strands.
- Install and Crimp Connector
Install the connector and crimp it using the recommended die marked on the connector. After crimping, clean and deburr the connector if required, as shown in Figure 3.
- Shrink Heat-Shrink Tubing
Center the heat-shrink tubing over the splice and hold it in place. Apply the outer 3 to 4 inch tip of the flame to the heat-shrinkable material with a rapid brushing motion. Keep the flame moving to avoid scorching. Begin shrinking at the center of the tube, working the flame around all sides to apply uniform heat (a). After the center portion shrinks, work the torch towards one end (b), then to the opposite end (c) until completely shrunk, as shown in Figure 4.
- Inspect Splice
Inspect the complete splice. The properly installed tube will be smooth and conform to the connection, with adhesive visible at both ends. Reheat any flat spots or wrinkles. Allow the installation to cool before touching, moving, or placing in service.
