How to Install the R2T28M2 Shrink-fit Silicone Rubber Termination
This guide provides detailed instructions for safely installing the 28kV Ranger 2 Shrink-fit Silicone Rubber Termination (R2T28M2) on tape shielded cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, and termination sealing. Always ensure apparatus is de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer)
Supplies needed:
Silicone Rubber Termination, Lubricant, Gray Silicone Rubber Tape, Constant Force Spring, Preformed Ground Braid, Sealing Mastic, Copper Foil Tape, Gloves, Connector, Terminal Lug, Vinyl Tape
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean work area.
- Prepare the Cable
Confirm the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart (Page 1). Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length, allowing for terminal lug depth and aluminum lug growth allowance (refer to Table 1 and diagrams for specific dimensions). Prevent the tape shield from unrolling by holding down its edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape.
- Install the Ground Braid
Wrap one band of mastic around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching it to 50%. Cut the mastic flush without overlapping. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and the first mastic band, maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension and 50% stretch. Cut flush. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, carefully maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring. Wrap the spring in the same direction as the ground braid, cinch it after the final winding, and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape.
- Install the Lug or Connector
Check that the termination assembly can fit over the selected lug. If not, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug. Do not remove the core at this stage. Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring the last 3/8" to 1/2" of the connector remains uncrimped. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges after crimping.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation thoroughly with an approved solvent, taking care not to let the solvent touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation only. Do not use abrasive on the semi-conductive insulation shield. Ensure the cable insulation diameter is not reduced below the kit's specified allowance.
- Install the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of the gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. Adjust the number of layers (not exceeding two) if the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, or build up to the insulation diameter if smaller. Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield to fill the step at the cut-off. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is firmly against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Continue removing the core without pushing or pulling the termination assembly.
- Complete Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, avoiding the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape. Overlap the termination insulator by approximately 1" and extend the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid securely to the system ground. Confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5".
