How to Install T&B Liquidtight Flexible Metallic Conduit Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for properly installing T&B liquidtight connectors with flexible metallic conduit, ensuring high performance and reliability in accordance with safety standards and electrical codes.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Hacksaw (32 Tooth/inch blade) or power band saw, Smooth jaw wrench, Torque wrench, Hand protection, Eye protection, Metal jig (optional, for conduit cutting)

Supplies needed:

Liquidtight flexible metallic conduit, T&B Liquidtight connector (e.g., 5000, 7000, 9000 series, or PVC coated 3300 series), T&B 140 series locknuts (if not included, for knockout applications), T&B 5260 series sealing gaskets (if not included, for knockout applications), PVC cement (optional, for PVC coated connectors if gouging occurs)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety

WARNING: Disconnect all power before beginning installation to prevent risk of shock. CAUTION: Ensure installation is performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Wear appropriate hand protection and eye protection throughout the installation process. Read and understand all instructions and safety information before proceeding.

  2. Cut the Flexible Conduit

Cut the liquidtight flexible metallic conduit with a clean, square end. For best results, use a metal jig (available from conduit manufacturers) and a sharp hacksaw with a 32 Tooth/inch blade. For high production, use a power band saw with a 24-32 Tooth/inch wavy set, operating at no more than 400 feet per minute. Do NOT use an abrasive wheel for cutting.

  3. Assemble the Connector Components

For 5000, 7000, 9000 series, and PVC coated 3300 series connectors, first slide the gland nut onto the conduit. Next, slide the nylon sealing ring onto the conduit. Finally, thread the Safe Edge™ Cone onto the conduit. For PVC coated connectors, use a smooth jaw wrench for tightening to prevent gouging. If gouging occurs exposing metal, apply PVC cement.

  4. Install Connector into Knockout Box (if applicable)

For knockout applications, use T&B® 140 series locknuts and T&B® 5260 series sealing gaskets (purchased separately). Position the connector body correctly, ensuring the 'Box side' is on the outside of the box. For Chase® connector assemblies, only the Chase® Nipple goes inside the knockout. Lock-up can be made by tightening the Chase® Nipple to the body or by turning the body onto the Chase® Nipple.

  5. Secure the Connector and Tighten to Torque

    Insert the assembled conduit and connector into the knockout box. Secure the locknut to the connector body. Tighten the locknut to the specified torque using a torque wrench according to the following values: 3/8": 200 lb.-in., 1/2": 300 lb.-in., 3/4": 500 lb.-in., 1": 700 lb.-in., 1 1/4": 1000 lb.-in., 1 1/2": 1200 lb.-in., 2": 1600 lb.-in., 2 1/2": 1600 lb.-in., 3": 1600 lb.-in., 3 1/2": 1600 lb.-in., 4": 1600 lb.-in. Ensure the connection is firm and liquidtight.
