How to Weld ELASTIMOLD Apparatus Bushings and Bushing Wells

This guide provides recommended procedures and safety guidelines for welding ELASTIMOLD apparatus bushings and bushing wells, focusing on minimizing heat to maintain epoxy integrity during the process.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

TIG Welding Equipment, MIG Welding Equipment, Thermocouple Detectors, Cleaning Supplies

Supplies needed:

No. 308 bare stainless steel wire, Copper heat sinks, Thermally conductive paste, HV insulated caps or connectors

  1. Prepare Apparatus and Components

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace them with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.

  2. Clean Surfaces and Set Up Heat Sinks

Thoroughly clean all surfaces of the tank, bushing, and bushing well to remove any contamination like paint or grease. Install copper heat sinks, applying thermally conductive paste at the contact face with the flange and cover. Ensure proper venting for the heat sinks. Do not thread heat sinks to the bushing or bushing well stud. WARNING: Excessive heating of the epoxy can affect the integrity of the bushing. Do not thread heat sink to bushing or bushing well stud as expansion due to heat may affect the integrity of these parts.

  3. Perform Welding Operation

Use either inert-gas, tungsten-arc (TIG) or short-arc (MIG) welding processes with No. 308 bare stainless steel wire. Keep heat to a minimum during welding; the visible heat line should not exceed 1/8 inch from the weld or 3/16 inch from the O.D. of the flange. Minimize air currents in the welding area to avoid disturbing the gas atmosphere. WARNING: Keep heat to a minimum to prevent damage to the epoxy.

  4. Monitor Temperature and Cool

Monitor temperatures at critical points, ensuring they do not exceed 225°F. If using non-water cooled heat sinks, remove them promptly after welding and air cool the bushing to prevent heat flow back into the bushing. Minimize forces applied to the heated stud and flange during and after welding. Do not apply torque to the epoxy when making any bus bar connection. WARNING: Non-water cooled heat sinks must not be left on too long as heat will flow back into the bushing.
