How to Install the K675-J3 Deadbreak Junction (Universal Mount)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K675-J3 Deadbreak Junction using the Universal Mount method. It covers mounting, assembly, grounding, and initial setup procedures for sectionalizing, looping, or tapping electrical circuits. Always ensure all apparatus is de-energized before installation.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wrenches or Sockets (for 3/8" and 1/2" hex nuts and cap screws), Marker, Wire strippers, Screwdriver (for grounding lug, if applicable), Cleaning cloths

Supplies needed:

K675-J3 Deadbreak Junction, Base Bracket, Base Plate, Universal Brackets (4), Mounting Hardware (3/8” hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, 3/8” hex nuts, 1/2” hex head cap screws, 1/2” split lock washers, 1/2” hex nuts), Fasteners (suitable for mounting universal brackets to surface, user-supplied), Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated caps (for unused bushings)

  1. De-energize and Inspect Components

Before beginning any work, ensure all apparatus is completely de-energized. Inspect all components for any signs of damage, verify their ratings, and confirm compatibility with all mating parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.

  2. Mark Mounting Location

Determine the desired location for the junction assembly on the flat mounting surface. Use the base plate as a template, place it on the surface, and accurately mark all four slot locations where the universal brackets will be attached.

  3. Mount Initial Universal Brackets

Attach two (2) universal brackets to the marked surface using suitable fasteners (user-supplied). Tighten these fasteners securely to ensure there will be no movement of the brackets during operation.

  4. Attach Remaining Universal Brackets

Attach the remaining two (2) universal brackets to the two brackets already mounted on the surface, positioning them at the desired angle. Use the supplied 3/8” hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, and 3/8” hex nuts. Tighten all connections securely.

  5. Assemble Junction to Base Bracket and Plate

Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Secure them using two (2) supplied 1/2” hex head cap screws, two (2) 1/2” split lock washers, and two (2) 1/2” hex nuts. Attach these to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly and tighten securely.

  6. Attach Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets

Attach the complete deadbreak junction assembly to the previously mounted universal brackets. Use the supplied 1/2” split lock washers, 1/2” hex nuts, and 1/2” hex head cap screws. Ensure the parking stand is in an upright position and tighten all hardware securely.

  7. Ground the Assembly

Ensure the base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket are properly grounded. Connect a suitable grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded) to the grounding lug provided on the base bracket for this purpose.

  8. Prepare Operating Interfaces

Remove all protective shipping caps from the operating interfaces and clean them thoroughly. Lubricate each interface with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. It is critical not to substitute with other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product or its mating components.

  9. Install Insulated Caps on Unused Bushings

If not all operating interfaces will be utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps on any unused bushing(s) before energizing the circuit. Do not use the protective shipping caps for this function, as they are not insulated and are only for handling and installation.
