How to Install 15/25/35kV 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Plug and Well Products

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 15/25/35kV 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Plug and Well Products, including mating with elbows or bushing extensions and performing voltage tests.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Torque wrench, ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (supplied with product), Silicone lubricant, HV insulated caps or connectors (to replace shipping covers)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components Safely

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Check the contents of the package to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Inspect all parts (plug, well, elbow, bushing extension) for any damage, verify their rating, and confirm compatibility with mating parts. Check all components to ensure proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. If the product was supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with the appropriate HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) before submerging or energizing the circuit. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare and Mate the Plug/Well Assembly

Remove any remaining protective caps from the plug or well product. If the 600 amp mating interface on the plug or well is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud (which comes packaged with the elbow or bushing extension) into it. Lubricate both the elbow and its mating part as indicated, using only the lubricant supplied with the product. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful to the products. Ensure the surfaces of the elbow and mating parts are clean before mating. Push the plug or well firmly into the elbow or bushing extension and engage the threads until fully seated.

  3. Torque Tighten the Connection According to Plug Type

For Insulating Plugs: Use a torque wrench and tighten the connection, exerting 50 to 60 foot-pounds of torque. For Connector Plugs, Tap Plugs, or Tap Wells: Use a torque wrench with an ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench. Tighten to an indicated torque reading of 40 to 48 foot-pounds (note that this is not the actual applied torque). For K651 and 750 Rubber Connecting Plugs, refer to special instructions IS-0915 for specific torque requirements.

  4. Install Voltage Detection Cap and Perform Voltage Test (If Applicable)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap with silicone lubricant. Place the cap onto the elbow and push down hard until it snaps securely into place. To Perform Voltage Test: Remove the test point cap using a hotstick. Peel it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the test point assembly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device, designed for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Safety: Contamination, moisture, dirt, or using the wrong measuring equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
