Overview

The ABB K656LR-N0300 is a dead-break elbow connector engineered for reliable 15/25 kV medium-voltage cable terminations up to 600 Amps. Designed for fully shielded, dead-front submersible applications, this connector ensures safe, insulated connections in power distribution systems. The K656LR-N0300 features a non-corrosive capacitive test point for system diagnostics without de-energizing the circuit, enabling efficient troubleshooting and maintenance. Key specifications include a voltage rating of 15/25 kV with a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 8.3 kV and phase-to-phase of 14.4 kV. It supports continuous current ratings of 600 Amps and withstands momentary fault currents up to 25 kA for 10 cycles. The connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 1.515 inches to 1.780 inches, making it compatible with compressed/stranded AWG 350, solid AWG 400, or compact mm² 185 conductors. Its fully molded rubber housing, constructed from 100% peroxide-cured EPDM materials, provides robust environmental resistance and submersibility. The K656LR-N0300 is ideal for applications requiring secure, insulated connections in medium-voltage power distribution networks, including utility substations, industrial facilities, and renewable energy installations. Its dead-break design allows safe connection and disconnection under de-energized conditions using standard hand tools, reducing downtime and enhancing operational safety. How to Install Elastimold 655/675LR and K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 655/675LR and K655/K675LR deadbreak elbow connectors on 15kV and 25kV class systems. It covers cable preparation, component assembly, and grounding procedures.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Measuring tape or ruler, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

Elastimold 655/675LR or K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), Cable (concentric neutral, jacketed, unishield, or lead sheath type), Mating high voltage apparatus or connector, Grounding device (e.g., 20MA, 21MA, 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, or alternate method), Silicone lubricant, No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent ampacity for grounding), Suitable connector for grounding wire, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Tape marker, Waterproofing material for cable jacket

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Parts

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. If the product is supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. Verify that all package contents are complete and undamaged, and that all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products.

  2. Prepare Cable for Assembly

Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack to allow for elbow removal. If using concentric neutral cable, unwind the concentric neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires. Refer to specific instructions for your cable type (e.g., 20MA/21MA grounding device, 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, UNISHIELD/LEAD SHEATH with 10TL adapter, or jacketed/non-jacketed cable) to remove the outer jacket and prepare the cable shield as shown in the provided diagrams.

  3. Install Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  4. Prepare Conductor Length

Remove any protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Exercise caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify that the length of the exposed conductor is between 4-1/4 inches and 4-9/16 inches (108mm-116mm). If the length is outside this range, redo the assembly.

  5. Crimp Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; this dimension must be less than 6-3/8 inches. Crimp the compression lug according to the instructions supplied with the lug. After crimping, wipe off all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface. Verify that the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-3/8 inches and 7-1/8 inches (162mm-181mm). If any dimension is incorrect, redo the assembly.

  6. Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter, pushing until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; if not, reposition the cable adapter. Once correctly positioned, remove the tape marker.

  7. Prepare Mating Product

DANGER: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove any protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring all surfaces remain clean.

  8. Connect Elbow to Mating Product

Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.

  9. Connect Opposite End Mating Product (if applicable)

Clean and lubricate the mating part intended for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow. Engage the threads and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the specific instructions supplied with that mating part. CAUTION: When constructing 600amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to its specified torque.

  10. Install Insulating Plug or Voltage Detection Cap (if applicable)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap onto the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place. Follow the voltage test directions provided in the next step.

  11. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a piece of wire, with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper, through the grounding eye and twist it to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow the instructions supplied with your grounding device. If no grounding device is used, ground the shield through an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  12. Perform Voltage Test

Remove the test point cap using a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the test point assembly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment; follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for separable connectors with capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can cause a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
