Overview

The ABB K656LR-M0420 is a dead-break elbow connector rated for 600 amperes at 15/25 kV, designed for underground distribution systems requiring reliable, maintenance-free terminations. This connector features an integrated test point for safe voltage verification without service interruption, meeting ANSI C119.4 and IEEE 386 standards for dead-break operation. The aluminum compression lug accepts conductors with insulation diameters from 1.370 to 1.630 inches and solid AWG 1250 cable, ensuring compatibility with medium-voltage distribution networks. The dead-break design eliminates the need for load interruption during installation or testing, reducing downtime in critical power applications. Typical installations include pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, and underground residential or commercial distribution systems where space constraints and safety protocols demand compact, high-current terminations. The connector's compression lug provides a gas-tight, corrosion-resistant joint that maintains electrical integrity over extended service life. For applications requiring frequent testing or commissioning, the test point enables non-invasive voltage detection while the system remains energized, enhancing operational safety and efficiency. This connector is part of ABB's K656LR series, a proven line of medium-voltage accessories engineered for utility and industrial power distribution networks.

How to Install Elastimold 655/675LR and K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 655/675LR and K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 15kV and 25kV class systems. It covers cable preparation, connector assembly, and initial testing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device for capacitive test points

Supplies needed:

Elbow connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (to replace shipping covers), Ground wire (minimum No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable ground connector, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation or removal of any parts. This product must only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating components. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace them with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. Check the package contents for completeness, ensure all components fit properly with the cable and mating products, and have all required tools at hand while maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Assemble the cable in its final position, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the concentric neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires. Follow the specific cable preparation instructions for your cable type (e.g., remove outer jacket, prepare insulation and semi-con shield to specified dimensions: 9-3/4 inches, 10-3/4 inches, 12-3/4 inches for insulation, semi-con shield, and tape marker respectively).

  3. Install Cable Adapter and Prepare Conductor

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Carefully remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The length of the exposed conductor must be between 4-1/4 inches and 4-9/16 inches (108mm-116mm); if not, redo the assembly.

  4. Crimp the Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping, ensuring it is less than 6-3/8 inches. Crimp the compression lug according to the instructions supplied with the lug. After crimping, wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter after crimping must be between 6-3/8 inches and 7-1/8 inches (162mm-181mm); if not, redo the assembly.

  5. Install the Elbow and Connect Mating Products

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify that the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker; if not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker. DANGER: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean.

  6. Assemble and Torque Mating Parts

Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully lining up the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part. Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the specific instructions supplied with that mating part. CAUTION: When constructing 600-amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to its specified torque per the provided instructions.

  7. Install Insulating Plug and Ground the Cable Shield

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow. Push down firmly until the cap snaps into place. Insert one end of a piece of ground wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; ground it according to the instructions supplied with the grounding device, or via an alternate method if no device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (if applicable)

If performing a voltage test using the integral capacitance test point: 1. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the assembly. 2. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is NOT directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for separable connectors with capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can cause a false 'no voltage' indication. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. 3. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
