How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

A comprehensive guide for the safe and proper installation of K655/K675LR and 655/675LR deadbreak elbow connectors, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to high voltage apparatus.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

Lubricant, Threaded stud (if needed), No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Compression lug, Cable adapter, Insulating plug (if used)

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all components for damage, verify ratings, and confirm compatibility with mating parts. Read all instructions thoroughly before starting.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Assemble the cable in its final position, allowing enough slack for elbow removal. If using concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires. Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable according to the specific type (e.g., non-jacketed, jacketed shield, flat metallic tape, fabric tape, or longitudinally corrugated shield), ensuring correct insulation, semi-con shield, and tape marker lengths as per diagrams.

  3. Install Cable Adapter and Prepare Conductor

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove any protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, taking care not to cut or nick the adapter or conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4-1/4 inches and 4-9/16 inches (108mm-116mm); otherwise, redo this step.

  4. Crimp the Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping, ensuring it is less than 6-3/8 inches. Crimp the compression lug following the instructions provided with the lug. After crimping, wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter surface. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-3/8 inches and 7-1/8 inches (162mm-181mm); otherwise, redo this step.

  5. Install the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; if not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.

  6. Prepare and Connect Mating Products

WARNING: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized, and do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud. If connecting an opposite end, clean and lubricate that mating part, insert it into the elbow, engage threads, hand tighten, and then torque according to its specific instructions. If an insulating plug is used, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and push it onto the elbow until it snaps into place.

  7. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent ampacity) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions supplied with a grounding device, or use an alternate method if no device is present. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  8. Final Torque of Components

CAUTION: For 600-amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to its specified torque as per the provided instructions. Verify all connections are secure.

  9. Perform Voltage Test and Secure Cap

WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Test for voltage using a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can cause false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
