How to Install Elastimold Deadbreak Elbow Connectors (655/675LR & K655/K675LR)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 655/675LR and K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation to prevent serious injury.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tools, Measuring tape or ruler

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector (655/675LR or K655/K675LR), Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug (optional), Lubricant (silicone), Threaded Stud (Stud Prepack), Tape marker, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Grounding wire (No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent), Suitable connector (for grounding wire), Waterproofing material (for cable jacket), Cleaning supplies

  1. De-energize and Inspect Apparatus

Ensure all apparatus are de-energized and isolated from power sources before starting installation. Inspect all components for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors.

  2. Prepare Cable for Assembly

Assemble the cable in its final position, allowing enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.

  3. Perform Cable Preparation

Prepare the cable according to its specific type. If using a 20MA/21MA grounding device or 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, refer to their instructions. For UNISHIELD* or LEAD SHEATH cable, use a 10TL cable shield adapter and its instructions. For jacketed and non-jacketed cable, remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable shield and insulation to the dimensions specified in the cable preparation diagrams.

  4. Install Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  5. Prepare Conductor Length

Remove any protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Be careful not to cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4-1/4” and 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm). If not, re-do the assembly.

  6. Install Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it. Measure the “Check Dimension” before crimping (should be less than 6-3/8”). Crimp the lug according to its instructions. Wipe off excess inhibitor. After crimping, the distance from the lug end to the cable adapter should be 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm). Re-do if dimensions are incorrect.

  7. Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  8. Prepare Mating Products

WARNING: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized, and do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.

  9. Connect Elbow to Mating Part

Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.

  10. Connect Opposite End of Elbow

Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow. Engage the threads and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions. CAUTION: For 600amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to the specified torque.

  11. Install Insulating Plug (Optional)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place it on the elbow and push down firmly until the cap snaps into place. Proceed to voltage testing as described in the next step.

  12. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent wire through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, avoiding damage to the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded, either via a grounding device (follow its instructions) or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket to prevent moisture ingress.

  13. Perform Voltage Test

Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Confirm 'no voltage' indication by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can give false readings. Treat the elbow as energized until confirmed safe. After testing, clean and lubricate the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it.
