How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides comprehensive instructions for the safe installation of K655/K675LR and 655/675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, covering cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to high voltage apparatus. Follow these steps carefully to ensure proper assembly and operation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cutting tool, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
Deadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), Cable (appropriate type for the connector), Grounding wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable ground connector, Silicone lubricant, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all package contents and components for completeness, damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness.
- Prepare Cable Slack and Clean Outer Surface
Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack to allow for elbow removal. Unwind any concentric neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the center line of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires.
- Prepare Cable Ends
Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable insulation, semi-con shield, and shield wires to the specified dimensions (e.g., 9-3/4”, 10-3/4”, 12-3/4” from the end) as shown in the product documentation for your specific cable type. Bind shield wires as necessary.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor Length
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The length of the exposed conductor must be between 4-1/4” – 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm). If the length is incorrect, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (should be less than 6-3/8”). Crimp the compression lug according to its supplied instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter. Verify the distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter is 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm) after crimping; otherwise, redo the assembly.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare and Connect to Mating Product
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part if it is not already equipped. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud.
- Connect Opposite End Mating Part (if applicable)
If connecting to another mating part on the opposite end of the elbow, clean and lubricate its surface. Insert the mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug (if applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down hard until it snaps into place.
- Ground Cable Shield and Waterproof Jacket
Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the grounding device instructions or an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Final Torque Check
CAUTION: When constructing 600amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to the specified torque per the instructions provided with the components.
- Conduct Voltage Test
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling off at an angle. Test with a suitable sensing device, following its manufacturer’s directions, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
