How to Install Elastimold Deadbreak Elbow Connectors (655/675LR and K655/K675LR)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 600-ampere and 900-ampere Elastimold Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 15kV and 25kV class systems, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to mating apparatus.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device, Torque wrench, Wire strippers, Knife or utility blade

Supplies needed:

Elbow connector (655/675LR or K655/K675LR), Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug (if applicable), Lubricant, Threaded stud prepack, Crimp chart, Wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable connector (for grounding wire), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Tape marker

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and De-energize Apparatus

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged, and all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Connection

Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24” (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires. Follow specific cable preparation instructions based on cable type (e.g., outer jacket removal, shield connection).

  3. Install the Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  4. Prepare the Conductor and Crimp the Lug

Remove protruding cable insulation even with the cable adapter, avoiding nicks to adapter or conductor. Exposed conductor length must be 4-1/4” to 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm). For copper, fully insert conductor into lug. For aluminum, wire brush and immediately insert. Measure 'Check Dimension' before crimping (must be < 6-3/8”). Crimp lug per instructions. Wipe excess inhibitor. Distance from lug end to cable adapter after crimping must be 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm).

  5. Install the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  6. Prepare Mating Products and Connect the Elbow

Remove protective caps from the elbow and mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (if needed) into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. For the opposite end, clean, lubricate, insert, and hand tighten the mating part. Torque mating part per its instructions. DANGER: Do not connect/disconnect or energize while disconnected.

  7. Install Insulating Plug (If Applicable) and Ground the Cable Shield

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow, pushing until it snaps into place. Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye, twist to form a small loop, and connect to ground. Ensure the cable shield is grounded. Waterproof the cable jacket to prevent moisture ingress.

  8. Perform Voltage Test

Use a hotstick to remove the test point cap by peeling at an angle. WARNING: This is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device for capacitive test points; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until 'no voltage' is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it.
