Overview

The ABB K656I-K0330 is a 2-way deadbreak separable straight joint package designed for 15-25kV medium voltage applications within the 600 Series. This package includes a test point for diagnostic capabilities and features aluminum compression lugs for secure conductor connections. Engineered for reliable performance, it accommodates cable insulation diameters ranging from 1.090 inches to 1.310 inches. The joint is compatible with various conductor sizes, including compressed stranded AWG/kcmil 500, compacted solid AWG/kcmil 600, and mm² compact 250/300. This product is suitable for medium voltage power distribution systems where secure and reliable cable jointing is essential. Its robust construction and specific electrical ratings ensure safe and efficient operation in industrial and utility environments. The inclusion of a test point facilitates routine electrical testing and troubleshooting without requiring the complete de-energization of the system, enhancing operational efficiency and safety. The aluminum compression lugs provide a strong, low-resistance connection to the conductors, critical for maintaining system integrity and minimizing power loss. This separable joint design allows for easier installation and maintenance compared to traditional molded joints. The 600A current rating ensures compatibility with high-demand applications, while the deadbreak separable design enables hot-stick operation for safe, live-line maintenance. Compatible with copper and aluminum conductors, this joint package supports a wide range of wire sizes, including (2) 2/0-500 AWG/kcmil, making it a versatile solution for medium voltage cable systems. The straight joint configuration simplifies installation in tight spaces, and the test point enables quick verification of electrical continuity and insulation integrity. How to Install K656 Deadbreak Receptacles

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of one leg of K656CY, K656CH, or K656I Deadbreak Receptacles, designed for splicing and tapping solid dielectric cables rated for 600A at 15kV and 25kV.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Hex wrench, Torque wrench with 15/16 inch socket, Wire brush (for aluminum cable), Assembly tool (650ATY or 600RRT), Rag, Approved safety solvent

Supplies needed:

Receptacle housings, Cable adapters, Center section (I, Wye, or H), Aluminum holding collars, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Hex-head bolts, Crimp connectors, Belleville washers, Flat washers, Nylon venting rod, No. 14 AWG copper wire (for grounding), Tape (for markers and support)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting. Inspect all receptacle components for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Confirm all package contents are complete and undamaged, and check threads for proper fit.

  2. Clean Cable Jacket and Position Housing

Wipe the outer cable jacket clean for a distance of 38 inches (96.5 cm) from the end. Cut the cable end squarely. If using an ECS grounding device, slide its tube onto the cable 38 inches. Then, slide the receptacle housing onto the cable 30 inches (76.2 cm).

  3. Prepare Cable End (Type-Specific)

Refer to the special cable preparation supplement (Part A for Jacketed Concentric Neutral or Part B for Flat Metallic Tape Shielded) for specific instructions. This involves removing the outer jacket and semi-con shield to specified lengths, creating a tape marker, beveling the insulation, and thoroughly cleaning the insulation. Lubricate the cable and the inside of the cable adapter, then slide the adapter onto the cable until flush with the tape marker.

  4. Trim Insulation and Assemble Retaining Ring

Remove any protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor measures 4 3/4 to 5 inches (12.1-12.7 cm). Assemble the aluminum retaining ring over the conductor, snug it firmly against the cable adapter, and hand-tighten the socket head screw. Confirm the exposed conductor now measures 4 3/8 to 4 3/4 inches (11.1-12.1 cm).

  5. Install and Crimp Connector

Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the crimp connector. Confirm bolt holes align with the mating part. Crimp the connector following the provided instructions, rotating each crimp 90 or 180 degrees. Verify the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar is 6 3/4 to 7 inches (17.1-17.8 cm).

  6. Assemble and Torque Splice Bolts

Assemble the washers and bolt: flat washer against the spade contact, then the Belleville washer (concave side down), followed by the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 inch socket, tighten all bolts to 50 to 60 ft. lbs. Do not move or reposition any part after tightening.

  7. Lubricate and Position Receptacle Housing

Apply the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant generously to the outside of the cable adapter, the splice section, and the inside mating surface of the receptacle housing. Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the edge of the interface. Insert the nylon venting rod.

  8. Engage Receptacle Housing with Assembly Tool

Attach either the 650ATY or 600RRT assembly tool. Use the tool to slowly slide the receptacle housing completely over the splice section. Once fully engaged, remove the nylon venting rod. WARNING: Do not place hands on the threaded rod or guide shaft if using the 600RRT tool.

  9. Complete Grounding

If an ECS grounding device is used, complete its installation according to its specific instructions. Connect a short length of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eyes of the housings. Make a small loop and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye, and connect to ground.
