How to Install Elastimold K656/K676 Series Deadbreak Receptacles
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Elastimold K656/K676 series deadbreak receptacles, including cable preparation, crimping, assembly, and grounding for 15kV and 25kV applications.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hex wrench, Torque wrench with 15/16 inch socket, Wire strippers, Wire brush (for aluminum cable), Safety solvent, Rag, 650ATY or 600RRT assembly tool, Measuring tape or ruler
Supplies needed:
Receptacle housings, Cable adapters, I, Wye or H Center sections, Aluminum holding collars, Elastimold approved lubricant, Hex-head bolts, Crimp connectors, Belleville washers, Flat washers, Nylon venting rod, Electrical tape, Conductive copper strip (for flat metallic tape shielded cable), No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent), ECS grounding device (optional)
- De-energize and Inspect Apparatus
Before beginning any work, ensure all apparatus in the work area are completely de-energized. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Failure to follow these safety instructions can result in serious or fatal injury.
- Initial Cable Preparation
Wipe the outer jacket of the cable clean for a distance of 38 inches (96.5 cm) from the end. Cut the cable end squarely. If using an ECS grounding device, slide the ECS tube onto the cable 38 inches (96.5 cm) from the end. Then, slide the receptacle housing onto the cable 30 inches (76.2 cm) from the end.
- Prepare Cable for Adapter Installation
Perform the necessary cable preparation steps according to your cable type (Jacketed Concentric Neutral or Flat Metallic Tape Shielded) as detailed in the provided supplement. This typically involves removing specific lengths of the outer jacket, neutral wires/tape shield, and semi-conducting shield, beveling the insulation, and thoroughly cleaning the insulation. Lubricate the prepared cable and the inside of the cable adapter with supplied or approved lubricant. Slide the cable adapter, small end first, over the cable with a twisting motion until its end is flush with the designated tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor and Install Retaining Ring
Remove any protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor measures 4 3/4 to 5 inches (12.06 to 12.7 cm); if not, redo the assembly. Assemble the aluminum retaining ring over the conductor, snugging it firmly against the cable adapter. Using the provided hex wrench, tighten the socket head screw hand tight. Confirm the exposed conductor now measures 4 3/8 to 4 3/4 inches (11.11 to 12.06 cm); if not, redo the assembly.
- Install and Crimp Connector
Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor immediately before insertion. Fully insert the conductor into the crimp connector barrel, ensuring it contains inhibitor. Measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; it must be 6 3/4 to 7 inches (17.14 to 17.78 cm) maximum. If over 7 inches, recheck previous work. Crimp the connectors following the instructions packaged with them, rotating each crimp 90 or 180 degrees. Re-measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; it must still be 6 3/4 to 7 inches (17.14 to 17.78 cm) maximum.
- Assemble and Torque Bolts
Assemble the washers and bolt in the following order: flat washer against the spade contact, Belleville washer (concave side down), then the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten the bolt. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 inch socket, tighten all bolts to 50 to 60 ft. lbs. The splice and cables are now in their final positions; do not attempt to move or reposition any part of the assembly after bolts are tightened.
- Lubricate and Position Receptacle Housing
Apply the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant generously to the outside of the cable adapter, the area of the splice section, and the inside mating surface of the receptacle housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the edge of the interface. Insert the nylon venting rod (supplied).
- Final Receptacle Housing Assembly
Attach the appropriate assembly tool (650ATY or 600RRT) as shown in the instructions. Slowly raise the handle (for 650ATY) or turn the hex nut (for 600RRT) to slide the receptacle housing completely over the splice section. WARNING: DO NOT place hand on threaded rod or guide shaft with the assembly tool in place. Remove the venting rod. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for any remaining cables.
- Complete Grounding
Check all cable adapters to ensure they are properly located and remove any vinyl tape markers. Complete the installation of the ECS grounding device according to its specific instructions, if used. Alternatively, connect a short length of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eyes of the housings, making a small loop and twisting tightly without damaging the eye, then connect to ground.
