How to Install K656/K676 Series Deadbreak Receptacles
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing K656 and K676 series deadbreak receptacles, including cable preparation, crimping, and final assembly for splicing and tapping solid dielectric cables.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Hex wrench, Torque wrench with 15/16 inch socket, Wire brush, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Rag, Approved safety solvent, 650ATY assembly tool OR 600RRT assembly tool
Supplies needed:
Receptacle housings, Cable adapters, I, Wye or H Center sections (splice section), Aluminum holding collars, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Hex-head bolts, Crimp connectors, Belleville washers, Flat washers, Nylon venting rod, ECS grounding device (if used), No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent), Tape (for markers, if applicable), Conductive copper strip (if applicable)
- De-energize and Inspect Apparatus
Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Failure to follow these safety instructions can result in serious injury or death.
- Prepare the Cable
Wipe the outer jacket clean for 38 inches and cut the cable end squarely. Refer to the 'Special Cable Preparation Supplement' (Part A for Jacketed Concentric Neutral Cable or Part B for Flat Metallic Tape Shielded Cable) included with these instructions. Follow the specific procedure for your cable type to remove the jacket, semi-con shield, and bevel the insulation. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all semi-conducting residue.
- Install Receptacle Housing and Cable Adapter
If using an ECS grounding device, slide the tube onto the cable 38 inches. Slide the receptacle housing onto the cable 30 inches. Apply lubricant sparingly along the cable and inside the cable adapter. Slide the adapter, small end first, over the cable with a twisting motion until it is flush with the tape marker (if used during cable prep). Remove any protruding cable insulation, ensuring the exposed conductor measures 4 3/4 to 5 inches. Assemble the aluminum retaining ring over the conductor, snug it against the cable adapter, and hand tighten the socket head screw with the hex wrench. Confirm the exposed conductor now measures 4 3/8 to 4 3/4 inches.
- Install and Crimp Connectors
Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor and immediately insert it fully into the crimp connector, which contains inhibitor. Confirm the bolt holes in the crimp connectors are positioned to align with the mating part. Crimp the connectors according to their instructions, rotating each crimp 90 or 180 degrees. After crimping, measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; it must be 6 3/4 to 7 inches maximum. Repeat this step for all remaining cables.
- Assemble and Torque Bolts
Assemble the washers and bolt in the following order: flat washer against the spade contact, Belleville washer (concave side down), and then the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten the bolt. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 inch socket, tighten all bolts to 50 to 60 ft. lbs. Do not attempt to move or reposition any part of the assembly after the bolts are tightened.
- Lubricate and Final Housing Assembly
Generously apply the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant to the outside of the cable adapter, the splice section, and the inside mating surface of the receptacle housing. Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the edge of the interface. Insert the nylon venting rod. Use either the 650ATY or 600RRT assembly tool to slowly slide the receptacle housing over the splice section. WARNING: If using the 600RRT tool, DO NOT place your hand on the threaded rod or guide shaft. Once the housing is in place, remove the venting rod. Repeat for all remaining cables.
- Complete Grounding
Check all cable adapters to ensure they are properly located and remove any vinyl tape markers. If an ECS grounding device is used, complete its installation per its instructions. Connect a short length of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eyes of the housings, making a small loop and twisting tightly without damaging the eye. Connect this wire to ground.
