How to Install K656/K676 Series Deadbreak Receptacles
This guide provides comprehensive instructions for the safe installation and assembly of K656 and K676 series deadbreak receptacles, including detailed cable preparation, crimping, and final grounding procedures for splicing and tapping solid dielectric cables. A complete installation requires repeating instructions for each cable leg (two for 'I', three for 'Y', and four for 'H' connectors).
Estimated time: 2h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Hex wrench, Wire brush (for aluminum cable), Crimp tool, Torque wrench with 15/16 inch socket, Rag, Approved safety solvent, 650ATY Assembly Tool OR 600RRT Assembly Tool
Supplies needed:
Receptacle housings, Cable adapters, I, Wye or H Center sections, Aluminum holding collars, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Hex-head bolts, Crimp connectors, Belleville washers, Flat washers, Nylon venting rod, Tape (for markers), Conductive copper strip (for flat metallic tape shielded cable, if applicable), No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent), ECS grounding device (if used)
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check package contents to ensure completeness and proper fit with cable and/or mating products. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable for Initial Assembly
Wipe the outer jacket clean for a distance of 38 inches and cut the cable end squarely to ensure maximum available length for crimp growth. If an ECS grounding device is being used, slide the tube onto the cable a distance of 38 inches. Slide the receptacle housing onto the cable a distance of 30 inches.
- Perform Detailed Cable Preparation According to Cable Type
Refer to the specific cable preparation supplement (Part A for Jacketed Concentric Neutral Cable or Part B for Flat Metallic Tape Shielded Cable with Semi-con Shield) included with these instructions. Carefully follow the procedure for your cable type, which includes removing the outer jacket, semi-con shield, beveling insulation, cleaning, and lubricating the cable before sliding on the cable adapter until it is flush with the tape marker. Ensure all measurements are precise to avoid redoing the assembly.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Connector
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The length of exposed conductor should be 4-3/4 to 5 inches; otherwise, redo assembly. Assemble the aluminum retaining ring over the conductor and snug it firmly against the cable adapter. Using the provided hex wrench, tighten the socket head screw hand tight. Confirm the exposed conductor now measures 4-3/8 to 4-3/4 inches; otherwise, redo assembly. Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor and immediately insert it fully into the crimp connector (which contains inhibitor). Confirm the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar is 6-3/4 to 7 inches maximum. Crimp the connectors following the instructions packaged with them, rotating each crimp 90 or 180 degrees. After crimping, re-measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar, ensuring it is 6-3/4 to 7 inches maximum; otherwise, redo all previous work.
- Assemble and Torque Bolts
Assemble the washers and hex-head bolt in the following order: flat washer against spade contact, Belleville washer (concave side down), then the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten. The splice and cables are now in their final positions; do not attempt to move or reposition any part of the assembly after the bolts are tightened. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 inch socket, tighten all bolts to 50 to 60 ft. lbs.
- Lubricate and Complete Receptacle Housing Assembly
Apply supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant generously to the outside of the cable adapter, the area of the splice section, and the inside mating surface of the receptacle housing. Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the edge of the interface. Insert the nylon venting rod (supplied). Using either the 650ATY or 600RRT assembly tool, slowly slide the receptacle housing over the splice section until fully seated. Remove the venting rod. WARNING: If using the 600RRT tool, do not place hands on the threaded rod or guide shaft with the assembly tool in place.
- Perform Final Checks and Grounding
Check all cable adapters to make sure they are properly located and remove all vinyl tape markers. If using an ECS grounding device, complete its installation according to the instructions included with the device. Connect a short length of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eyes of the housings. Make a small loop and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye, and connect this wire to ground.
