How to Install K656CETPN0410 Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to mating apparatus.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable preparation tools, Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductor), 600AT assembly tool (for products dated Sep 30, 2013 or earlier), 600ATM assembly tool (for products dated Oct 1, 2013 or later), Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer (if fabric tape shield), Tape marker (if applicable), Compression Lug (supplied), Cable Adapter (supplied), Elbow (supplied), Wire with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper, Suitable connector for grounding wire, Silicone grease
- De-energize Apparatus and Position Cable
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Position the cable in its final assembled location with enough slack. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable and Prepare Outer Jacket/Shield
Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24” (610mm). Remove the outer jacket to the specified dimension. Fold back shield wires. Remove any flat metallic tape, fabric tape, longitudinally corrugated, or semi-con shields as per instructions, installing tape retainers and markers where required. Do not cut or nick cable insulation.
- Bevel Insulation and Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean, then lubricate (lubricant supplied) the cable insulation, working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor Length
Cut the protruding cable insulation even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor length is 4 3/8”–4 11/16” (111mm–119mm). Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or conductor. If the length is incorrect, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductor, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductor, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (must be less than 6 1/2” (165mm)). Crimp the lug according to its supplied instructions. Wipe off all excess inhibitor. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is 6 1/2”–7 1/4” (165mm–184mm) after crimping. If incorrect, redo the assembly.
- Lubricate and Install Elbow
Lubricate (lubricant supplied) the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Parts and Install Stud
WARNING: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until fully seated. Clean and lubricate (lubricant supplied) both the elbow and the mating part, keeping surfaces clean.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part. Use the appropriate assembly tool (600AT for products dated Sep 30, 2013 or earlier, or 600ATM for products dated Oct 1, 2013 or later) to engage the hex broach in the contact assembly. Insert the contact assembly into the elbow interface to engage the stud. Torque the contact assembly until the torque limiter on the 600AT ratchets (19 to 25 foot/pounds) or tighten to 50/60 foot/pounds with the 600ATM (DO NOT EXCEED 60 FOOT POUNDS TORQUE).
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a piece of wire with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, without damaging the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the instructions supplied with the grounding device, or through an alternate method if no device is used. It is also recommended that the cable jacket be waterproofed at this point.
- Install Loadbreak Interface (Optional)
Clean and lubricate (lubricant supplied) the entire loadbreak interface and any mating DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR components of the appropriate voltage class. Install these components to the tap plug interface following their specific instructions.
- Verify Seating Indication
Confirm complete assembly of an insulated cap or elbow by ensuring no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side.
- Perform Voltage Test (656CETP only)
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. If using the integral capacitance test point on a 656CETP, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized, following the meter's manufacturer directions. Contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication; treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it.
