How to Install 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, crimping, and connection to high voltage apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductor), 600AT assembly tool OR 600ATM assembly tool, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer (if applicable), Tape marker (if applicable), Compression lug (supplied), Wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable grounding connector, Silicone grease
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Procedures
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.
- Position Cable and Make Initial Cut
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the concentric neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable Outer Surface
Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires.
- Prepare Cable Outer Jacket
Remove the cable's outer jacket to the dimension shown in the product documentation. If using a 20MA, 21MA grounding device, or 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, refer to their specific installation instructions for jacket removal, shield connection, and grounding.
- Prepare Cable Shield Wires
Fold back the cable shield wires.
- Prepare Flat Metallic Tape Shield (if applicable)
Remove any flat metallic tape shield and secure the remaining shield with vinyl plastic tape to the dimension shown in the product documentation.
- Prepare Fabric Tape Shield (if applicable)
Remove any fabric tape shield and install a tape retainer and tape marker to the dimensions shown in the product documentation.
- Prepare Longitudinally Corrugated Shield (if applicable)
Remove any longitudinally corrugated shield and install a tape marker to the dimension shown in the product documentation.
- Prepare Semi-Con Shield (if applicable)
Remove any semi-con shield and install a tape marker to the dimensions shown in the product documentation. Exercise extreme caution not to cut or nick the cable insulation.
- Bevel, Clean, Lubricate, and Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation with the supplied lubricant, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor Length
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length should be 4 3/8 to 4 11/16 inches (111mm to 119mm); otherwise, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it should be less than 6 1/2 inches (165mm). Crimp the compression lug following the supplied crimping instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. The distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be 6 1/2 to 7 1/4 inches (165mm to 184mm); otherwise, redo the assembly.
- Lubricate and Install Elbow
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance with the supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Products and Install Stud
DANGER: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until it is fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part. If the product is dated September 30, 2013, or earlier, use the 600AT assembly tool to engage the hex broach in the contact assembly, insert it into the elbow interface to engage the stud, and torque until the 600AT ratchets (19 to 25 foot/pounds). If the product is dated October 1, 2013, or later, use the 600ATM assembly tool, engage the hex broach, insert the contact assembly, and tighten to 50-60 foot/pounds torque. DO NOT EXCEED 60 FOOT POUNDS TORQUE.
- Ground Cable Shield and Waterproof Jacket
Insert one end of a wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; ground it according to the instructions supplied with any grounding device, or by an alternate method if no device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Install Loadbreak Interface (Optional)
Clean and lubricate the entire loadbreak interface and either a DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR of the appropriate voltage class with the supplied lubricant or an ELASTIMOLD® approved lubricant. Install the DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR to the tap plug interface following the instructions supplied with those specific products.
- Verify Seating Indication
Confirm the complete assembly of an insulated cap or elbow by ensuring no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side.
- Perform Voltage Test (656CETP only)
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific meter used. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication; treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
