How to Install the 600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of the 600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug, an accessory for power distribution systems. It covers stud installation, lubrication, connection, and grounding.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Torque wrench, 600ATM or 3/8 inch hex bit socket, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Connecting Plug, Lubricant (supplied with plug), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire (if applicable), Mating plug device (e.g., elbow, bushing extender)
- Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before starting installation or removal of any parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect the connecting plug and all mating parts for any damage, verify their ratings, and confirm compatibility. Check the package contents to ensure all parts are complete and undamaged. Confirm proper fit of all components with the cable and/or mating products. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Install the Stud (If Applicable)
If the mating plug device (e.g., elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module) is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud into the mating plug device. Thread the stud in until the start of the flats are below the contact surface.
- Clean and Lubricate Components
Clean both the connecting plug and its mating part thoroughly. Lubricate the connecting plug and its mating part with the lubricant supplied in the package. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE with other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the products. Ensure all surfaces of the connecting plug and mating parts remain clean during this process.
- Connect and Torque the Plug
Push the connecting plug firmly into the mating part (elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module). Engage the threads and hold the contact of the connecting plug against the contact surface of the mating part. Using a 600ATM or a 3/8 inch hex bit socket and a torque wrench, tighten the connection to 50 to 60 foot-pounds (68 to 81 newton-meters) of torque.
- Install Grounding Wire (If Applicable)
If grounding is required, insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the connecting plug. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the grounding eye. Connect the other end of the wire securely to ground.
