How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including initial safety checks, cable preparation, elbow assembly, neutral connection, and final connection to a deadbreak bushing or accessory device.
Tools needed:
Wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
Lubricant, Hold-down Bail, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper wire, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Vinyl tape (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if applicable), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Perform Initial Safety and Part Inspection
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus during installation or removal. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. If supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. Failure to follow instructions will result in damage and serious or fatal injury.
- Conduct Pre-Installation Checks
Read the entire installation instruction before starting. Check the contents of the package to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Check the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper fit with the cable. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. Ensure the unit will be bailed. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Non-Jacketed Concentric Neutral Cable
Train cable to ensure slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable to 24-26 inches (610-660mm) beyond the centerline of the bushing. Bind neutrals 7 3/4 to 8 inches (195-203mm) further back from the center of the bushing. Connect neutral wires to the tank ground with a jumper or braid. Unwrap the neutral wire to the binding. Cut excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Prepare Jacketed Concentric Neutral Cable
Train cable to ensure slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable to 24-26 inches (610-660mm) beyond the centerline of the bushing. Place a tape mark at the centerline of the bushing. Remove the outer jacket 9 5/8 inches (240mm) further back from the tape mark. Connect neutral wires to the tank ground with a jumper or braid. Unwrap the neutral wire back past the bushing centerline. Cut excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a 200ECS sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable beginning at the loose end.
- Prepare Jacketed Cable with Drain Wires
Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket. Unwrap the ground wires, DO NOT CUT OFF, bind and fold them back out of the way. Wrap a piece of vinyl tape around the cable covering the wire ends. If using a 200ECS-G1 sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable beginning at the loose end.
- Prepare Jacketed Copper Tape Shield Cable
Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket. Remove 7-1/8 inches (180mm) of the copper tape shield. Wrap conductive copper tape, included with the 200ECS-G2 kit, over the end of the copper shield to hold it in place. If using a 200ECS-G2 kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable, loose end first.
- Complete Cable Preparation
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately place the compression lug over the bushing, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown (6-7/8 inches (175mm) from cable end). Bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Clean the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing, then lubricate with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.
- Assemble the Hold-down Bail
Place the hold-down bail in the hold-down bracket.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing. Lubricate only if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow on the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.
- Secure Elbow with Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional)
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling off at an angle. Test with a suitable sensing device made for use with separable connectors with capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination or wrong equipment can provide a false “no voltage” indication. Treat the elbow as energized until “no voltage” is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
