How to Install the K655BEN Deadbreak Bushing Extension
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15, 25, 35kV 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Bushing Extension, including cleaning, lubrication, assembly, torquing, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Torque wrench, ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench, 600-AT, Suitable tool for hex, 600ATM
Supplies needed:
Bushing Extension, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Double ended stud, Compression lug (temporary), Insulating plug (temporary), #14 AWG copper wire, Suitable connector for grounding, Mating components (e.g., connecting plug, deadend plug), Protective cap
- Ensure Safety and Prepare Components
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Have all required tools and supplies at hand, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Bushing Extension for Connection
Remove any protective caps from the bushing extension. Thoroughly clean the entire bushing extension interface and lubricate it using the supplied lubricant or an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Ensure all mating surfaces remain clean.
- Connect and Hand-Tighten the Mating Product
Clean the interface of your connecting plug, deadend plug, reducing tap plug, reducing tap well, or elbow tap plug, and lubricate it with the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Finger tighten the double-ended stud, supplied with the bushing extension, into this mating product. Carefully insert this assembled product into the bushing extension, pushing the assembly onto the bushing, engaging the threads, and hand-tighten.
- Torque the Assembly to Specification
Using a torque wrench, tighten the assembly to the specified torque for your plug type. Insulating Plugs: 50-60 ft-lbs. Epoxy Connecting Plugs, Reducing Tap Plugs, Tap Wells: Use ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench, 40-48 ft-lbs. Retainer Sleeve/Pin Contact: Use 600-AT with hex tool, 50-60 ft-lbs. Elbow Tap Plugs: Use 600ATM, 50-60 ft-lbs. Rubber Connecting Plugs: Hand-tighten, then temporarily install a compression lug and insulating plug, torque insulating plug nut to 50-60 ft-lbs, then hold compression lug while removing temporary plug and lug.
- Complete Mating Component Assembly
Clean and lubricate any remaining interfaces of the connecting plug, reducing tap plug, reducing tap well, or elbow tap plug. Assemble the appropriate mating component according to its specific instructions. If using an insulating plug, assemble the provided protective cap as per its instructions.
- Ground the Bushing Extension
Connect a short length of #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent to the grounding eye of the bushing extension. Form a small loop and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire securely to ground using a suitable connector. Any mating components assembled in Step 5 that require grounding should also be connected to ground in this manner.
