How to Install the YBIP Deadbreak Insulating Plug With Test Point

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the YBIP Deadbreak Insulating Plug, including assembly, lubrication, housing placement, and outlines the procedure for using its integrated voltage test point.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Torque wrench with 15/16 socket, Hotstick, Capacitive voltage sensing device

Supplies needed:

YBIP Deadbreak Insulating Plug, Hex head bolt, Belleville washer, Flat washer, Nylon venting rod, ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, Insulating plug cap, Silicone grease, Hose clamp (for 35kV systems)

  1. De-energize System and Prepare Cable

DANGER: Ensure the electrical system is completely de-energized prior to starting any work. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Slide the receptacle back to expose the cable contact and unbolt the cable from the splice housing. Do not touch or move energized products.

  2. Assemble Insulating Plug Components

Assemble the insulating plug with the flat washer against the spade contact, followed by the Belleville washer, and then the hex head bolt. Ensure the Belleville washer is oriented correctly as shown in the product figure. Hand tighten the bolt initially. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 socket, tighten the bolt to 30-40 ft./lbs. Do not attempt to move or reposition any part of the assembly after the bolt is hand tightened.

  3. Apply Lubricant to Insulating Plug

Generously apply the supplied lubricant or an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant to the designated area of the insulating plug. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product.

  4. Install Receptacle Housing

Slide the receptacle housing over the connector and up to the indicated position. Insert the supplied nylon venting rod. Continue to slide the receptacle housing onto the insulating plug until it is fully seated. Once fully seated, remove the venting rod.

  5. Install Insulating Plug Cap

Lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap with silicone grease. Place the cap over the insulating plug and push down firmly until the cap 'snaps' into place, ensuring a secure fit.

  6. Perform Voltage Test Using Capacitive Test Point

The insulating plug is equipped with an integral capacitance test point. To use it, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. CAUTION: This is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use only a specially designed capacitive voltage sensing device; conventional voltage measuring equipment will not provide an indication. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the meter. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.

  7. Secure Receptacle Housing (35kV Only)

For 35kV systems only, position the hose clamp between the locater bumps on the receptacle housing. Tighten the clamp until you hear it click, ensuring it is securely fastened.
