How to Install the K655SR/M655SR Deadbreak Straight Receptacle
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K655SR or M655SR Deadbreak Straight Receptacle, including preparing the apparatus bushing, cable, and connecting the components for a secure, high-voltage connection. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
5/8-11 tap, Hex wrench, Torque wrench with 15/16 socket, Wire brush (for aluminum cable), Wire strippers (implied for cable prep), Suitable connector tool (implied for neutral wires)
Supplies needed:
Receptacle housing, Bushing adapter, Cable adapter, Aluminum holding collar, Hex head bolt, Crimp connector, Belleville washer, Flat washer, Nylon venting rod, Lubricants (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Brass bolt, Bushing converter contact, Loctite, Tape marker, No. 14 AWG copper wire or equivalent, Hose Clamp (M655SR for 35kV only)
- Prepare the Apparatus Bushing
If a stud is present in the apparatus bushing, remove it and re-tap the hole using a 5/8-11 tap. Clean and lubricate the apparatus bushing and bushing converter interface. Assemble the bushing converter onto the apparatus bushing. Apply 3-4 drops of Loctite to the brass bolt threads. Assemble the contact adapter to the apparatus bushing, ensuring the bolt hole faces out, using the 5/8” brass bolt. Torque the bolt to 60 ft.-lbs.
- Train and Cut the Cable
Train the cable end and straighten it into its final position. Cut the cable squarely to ensure maximum available length for crimp growth. IMPORTANT: A square cut is crucial for proper crimp performance.
- Manage Concentric Neutral Wires (If Applicable)
If applicable, unwrap the concentric neutral wires a distance of 30” (76cm). Do not cut these wires; instead, bend and fold them back out of the way to prevent interference during subsequent steps.
- Clean the Cable Outer Jacket
Wipe the outer jacket of the cable clean for a distance of 38” (96.5cm) or up to the concentric neutral wires, ensuring a clean surface for installation.
- Position Receptacle Housing
Slide the receptacle housing onto the cable a distance of 30” (76cm) from the end, ensuring it is clear of the working area for cable preparation.
- Prepare Semi-Con Shield
Remove the semi-con shield according to the specified dimensions (10-1/4” (26.04cm) and 11-1/4” (28.58cm)) and install a tape marker. Exercise extreme caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable insulation.
- Bevel Insulation and Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45˚ angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Expose and Measure Conductor
Carefully remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4 3/4” and 5” (12.06cm – 12.7cm); if not, stop and redo the assembly from previous steps.
- Secure Holding Collar
Position the holding collar over the exposed conductor, ensuring it is flush against the cable adapter. Use the supplied hex wrench to tighten the setscrew, securing the collar in place.
- Insert Conductor into Crimp Connector
Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor and immediately insert it fully into the crimp connector, which contains inhibitor. Measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; if it exceeds 7” (17.8cm), stop and redo all previous work.
- Verify Component Alignment
Confirm that all components (Receptacle Housing, Cable Adapter, Crimp Connector, Contact Adapter) are oriented in the correct sequence. Crucially, ensure the bolt hole in the crimp connector is perfectly aligned with the bolt hole in the contact adapter.
- Crimp the Connectors
Crimp the connectors according to the instructions provided with the connectors, rotating each crimp 90˚. After crimping, measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; if it exceeds 7” (17.8cm), do not proceed and redo all previous work.
- Secure Connection with Washers and Bolt
Assemble the flat washer against the spade contact, followed by the Belleville washer (concave side down), and then the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten the assembly. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 socket, tighten the bolt to 50-60 ft.-lbs. IMPORTANT: Do not attempt to move or reposition any part of the assembly after the bolts are tightened.
- Lubricate Adapters
Generously apply the supplied lubricant or an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant to the outside of the cable adapter and the bushing adapter area. WARNING: Do not substitute lubricants, as other types may be harmful to the product or its mating components.
- Seat Housing and Connect Ground
Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the interface edge. Insert the supplied nylon venting rod. Slide the receptacle housing onto the bushing converter until it is fully seated, then remove the venting rod. Connect a short piece of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eye of the receptacle housing, forming a small loop and twisting tightly. Gather the concentric neutral wires and, using a suitable connector, connect them with the grounding wire.
- Secure Hose Clamp (35kV Only)
FOR 35kV ONLY: Position the hose clamp between the locator bumps on the receptacle housing. Tighten the clamp until an audible click is heard, ensuring it is securely fastened.
