How to Weld ELASTIMOLD Apparatus Bushings and Bushing Wells
This guide provides suggested recommendations and procedures for welding ELASTIMOLD apparatus bushings and bushing wells, emphasizing heat management and proper setup.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
TIG Welding Equipment, MIG Welding Equipment, Thermocouple Detectors
Supplies needed:
No. 308 bare stainless steel wire, Copper Heat Sinks, Thermally Conductive Paste, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- Prepare Apparatus and Work Area
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting any work. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged. Thoroughly clean all surfaces, including the tank, bushing, and bushing well, removing any contamination like paint or grease, as this can extend welding time and negatively affect the bushing's integrity. If the product includes protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing the circuit.
- Configure Heat Sinks
Utilize copper heat sinks to effectively minimize heat flow to the epoxy during welding. Apply thermally conductive paste to the contact faces of the heat sinks that will touch the flange and cover. Ensure adequate venting is provided for the heat sinks. Position the bottom heat sink with a larger diameter than the top to maximize heat absorption away from the tank. Do not thread heat sinks to the bushing or bushing well stud, as expansion due to heat may compromise the integrity of these parts. If using non-water cooled heat sinks, remove them promptly after welding and air cool the bushing to prevent heat from flowing back into the component.
- Execute Welding Process and Monitor Temperature
Perform welding using either Inert-gas, tungsten-arc (TIG) or Short-arc (MIG) processes, utilizing No. 308 bare stainless steel wire. Maintain heat to a minimum; the visible heat line should not exceed 1/8 inch from the weld or 3/16 inch from the outer diameter of the flange. Minimize air currents in the welding area to prevent disturbance of the gas atmosphere. Monitor temperatures at critical points using thermocouple detectors, ensuring they do not exceed 225°F. Handle the heated stud and flange carefully both before and after welding to minimize any applied forces. Avoid applying torque to the epoxy when making any bus bar connections.
