Overview

The ABB K650BIPSP 15/25kV 600 Series Deadbreak Insulated Plug (with Cap) is a factory-assembled, non-field-removable connector engineered for medium-voltage cable terminations in 15kV and 25kV systems. Designed for 600A class cables, this deadbreak plug provides a reliable, insulated interface for switchgear, transformers, and distribution equipment. The integrated cap protects against contamination during handling and storage, ensuring clean terminations before installation. Rated for continuous 600A current and 25kA symmetrical momentary fault current (10 cycles), the K650BIPSP meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 and ANSI C119.4 for deadbreak interfaces. It supports phase-to-ground operating voltages up to 16.2kV (25kV class) and 8.3kV (15kV class), with impulse withstand ratings of 140kV BIL (25kV) and 95kV BIL (15kV). The plug features a hex nut capacitive test point for safe voltage verification in de-energized states. Compatible with ABB’s 600 Series equipment, including Elastimold® K655/6BLR, K655BE, and K655BVS connectors, the K650BIPSP integrates seamlessly with existing deadbreak bushings. Its compact design minimizes phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground clearances, making it ideal for tight enclosures like pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, and junction boxes. The factory-assembled stud eliminates field variability, ensuring consistent torque and long-term reliability. Each kit includes the insulating plug with cap, lubricant tube (82-08), and installation instructions (IS-0230). The plug’s fully shielded epoxy housing and peroxide-cured EPDM materials deliver corrosion resistance and dielectric integrity in harsh environments. For applications requiring additional functionality, optional accessories support visible separation, bypass, isolation, grounding, testing, and circuit protection.

How to Install the LINK-C Deadbreak Cam Link Operable Connector System

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the LINK-C 600 amp deadbreak cam link operable connector system, covering component assembly, lubrication, and grounding procedures for safe and effective setup.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

600ATM Operating Tool, Hot stick, Torque wrench, Welding equipment, Wire strippers, Wrench (1 inch)

Supplies needed:

600 amp elbow, Stand-off plug, 3/8-16 x 2” studs, Hex nuts (6), Lockwashers (3), ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant, 600 amp bushing extender, Retainer contact, Alignment bracket, Bushing extender clamp, Elbow clamp, #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector, HV insulated caps or connectors (if replacing shipping covers)

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. Verify all components are complete, undamaged, and compatible with mating parts. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors if submerging or energizing the circuit.

  2. Install 600 Amp Elbow onto Cable

Install the 600 amp elbow onto the cable according to its specific installation instructions, ensuring it will align correctly with the stand-off plug.

  3. Install Mounted Stand-Off Plug

Weld three 3/8-16 x 2” studs to the faceplate according to customer standards and specified dimensions. Install three hex nuts onto the studs to support the stand-off plug, ensuring it aligns with the bushing. Place the stand-off plug over the studs, resting on the nuts. Secure the stand-off plug by installing a lockwasher and hex nut on each stud, then tighten to 12 ft-lbs torque. Adjust nuts as needed to ensure the top surfaces of the bushing and stand-off plug are in-line.

  4. Install Bushing Extender and Elbow onto Apparatus

Clean and thoroughly lubricate the apparatus bushing and both interfaces of the 600 amp bushing extender with ELASTIMOLD lubricant. Install the bushing extender onto the apparatus bushing. Insert the 600ATM Operating Tool into the retainer contact, engage the internal hex broach, and thread the retainer contact into the apparatus bushing using a wrench on the 1” hex portion of the 600ATM, torquing to 50-60 ft-lbs. Clean and thoroughly lubricate the epoxy standoff plug and both interfaces of the 600 amp elbow with ELASTIMOLD lubricant. Install the elbow onto the epoxy standoff plug. Insert the 600ATM Operating Tool into the retainer contact, engage the internal hex broach, and thread the retainer contact into the epoxy standoff plug through the compression lug, torquing to 50-60 ft-lbs.

  5. Install Alignment Bracket

Remove the bushing extender clamp and elbow clamp from the alignment bracket. Position the alignment bracket on the bushing extender 2.5 inches (63.5mm) from the grounding eye. Assemble the bushing extender clamp to the alignment bracket with supplied hardware, torquing by alternating sides until clamp tabs are flush and tight. Position the elbow in the alignment bracket so the elbow cuff aligns evenly with the bushing extender cuff. Assemble the elbow clamp to the alignment bracket with supplied hardware, torquing by alternating sides until clamp tabs are flush and tight, ensuring the elbow clamp notch faces the cable entrance.

  6. Insert and Engage the Link

Clean and thoroughly lubricate both 600 ampere interfaces of the Link with ELASTIMOLD lubricant. Align the Link perpendicular to the switch faceplate. Insert the Link into the bushing extender and elbow, ensuring both lever arms are inside the alignment bracket legs. Engage the pivot pin into the slots of the alignment bracket legs. While pushing inward, use a hot stick eye to move the lever arms downward, engaging the roller pin and moving the Link inward until the lever arms are perpendicular to the alignment bracket leg.

  7. Ground the System

Ground the elbow by feeding a #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire through its grounding eye, twisting it tight, and connecting it to ground. Clean and lubricate the 200 amp interface on the Link. Ground and then install the desired mating product on the 200 amp interface according to its instructions. Ground the cable: for concentric neutral cable, twist wires together and connect to ground; for 20MA or 21MA grounding devices, connect the ground lead to ground. For three-phase installations, tie all grounds from all three phases to a common ground point.
