How to Install the K656LR-N-AC04 Shear Bolt Connector
Instructions for installing the K656LR-N-AC04 shear bolt connector on copper or aluminum conductors.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Hexagon socket (AF 3/4” or SW19), Wire brush, Pliers (for manual rework, if needed)
Supplies needed:
K656LR-N-AC04 Shear Bolt Connector, Cable accessory (for preparation), Insulated cap or connector (if submerging/energizing)
- Inspect and Prepare Components
Verify that the package contents are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Read all installation instructions before starting. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Insert Center Ring
Insert the appropriate center ring into the barrel of the K656LR-N-AC04 connector. Refer to the table in the documentation for the correct center ring based on conductor type and size (750 kcmil).
- Prepare Cable
Prepare the cable as specified in the instructions accompanying the applicable cable accessory. Clean the conductor surface using a wire brush, especially for aluminum conductors, immediately before inserting it into the barrel.
- Initial Bolt Tightening
Insert the conductor into the barrel. Loosely install bolts #1, #2, and #3. Apply slow, steady turns to bolt #1 until it makes contact with the conductor. Repeat this process for bolts #2 and #3.
- Shear Bolt Heads
Using the specified hexagon socket (AF 3/4” or SW19), begin with bolt #1 and apply torque alternately to each bolt. Continue applying torque until the head of each bolt shears off flush with the connector barrel. It is recommended to hold the connector barrel securely during this process. Do not use impact guns.
- Verify Shearing and Rework if Necessary
Inspect the connector to ensure all bolt heads have sheared off flush with the connector barrel. If any bolt heads do not shear off flush, manual rework is required. Contact Elastimold® technical services for guidance.
- Finalize Installation
If the product was supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace them with the appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.
