How to Install the K151SR/151SR Straight Receptacle
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of the K151SR or 151SR straight receptacle, including cable preparation, crimping, assembly, and grounding procedures for high-voltage electrical systems.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Rag
Supplies needed:
Conductor Contact (male), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), Elastimold bail, Silicone grease, Approved solvent
- Perform Safety Checks and Component Inspection
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high-voltage safety practices. Inspect all components for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors if the circuit will be submerged or energized before final connection. A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.
- Prepare Cable Jacket
Based on your cable type: For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove 8 inches of the cable jacket from the end, ensuring enough neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove 7 1/2 inches of the cable jacket, then remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the end of the cable. Consult specific instructions for ECS or MA grounding devices if used.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Terminal
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 comp./solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately, then insert them into the crimp barrel which contains inhibitor.
- Crimp Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring the conductor remains fully seated. Refer to the crimp chart (packed with contact) for specific instructions. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation
Remove the semi-conductive shield 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, squared cut, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with a rag wet with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end towards the outer jacket to remove all semi-conducting residue. Install ECS or MA grounding device if applicable.
- Lubricate and Insert Cable into Receptacle
Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Sparingly apply the supplied lubricant to the cable as indicated and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute lubricants as they may be harmful. Push the cable into the housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. If not connecting immediately, replace with an Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP) as the shipping cover is not an insulating device.
- Connect to Mating Plug
Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Insert the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches), ensuring it is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an Elastimold bail.
- Ground the Cable
If not using an ELASTIMOLD grounding device, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal all grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
