How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing cables, assembling the K151SP Straight Plug, and connecting it to a mating receptacle on 15kV and 25kV class systems.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Rag
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied with K151SP), ELASTIMOLD bail, Customer-supplied #14 AWG copper wire (for grounding, if needed), Approved solvent, Silicone grease
- Ensure Safety and Prepare Components
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation or removal. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Ensure you are a competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Check the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged, and verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable Jacket
For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires remain for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the cable end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.
- Remove Cable Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.
- Crimp the Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel firmly against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact for specific instructions. Begin crimping at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel, rotating each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Insulation and Clean Cable
Temporarily remove the plastic pin from the socket. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket using a straight, smooth, and squared cut. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the outer jacket and insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its instructions.
- Install Collar and Lubricate
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep the cable insulation and the plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown in the diagram and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may harm the product or its mating component.
- Insert Cable into Plug Housing
Push the prepared cable into the plug housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Once the cable is fully inserted, remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Carefully place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms, approximately 1-3/4 inches deep, ensuring the rod is not cut during mating. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out and remove the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail; refer to the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4) for proper installation.
- Establish Grounding Connection
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist it tightly. Connect this grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal all grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
